Greetings to you and welcome! We are about to take a very important journey together--a journey through the diverse and critically important world of educational assessment. As you will see, both student achievement and academic self-concept are determined, by and large, on the basis of students' perceptions of their own success in the classroom. Students rely almost completely on the day-to-day, week-to-week, and term-to-term classroom assessments of their achievement to judge their current success and their hope for success in the future.

“What a learned-centered perspective and model helps educators understand is that individual learners, young and old, students and teachers—like all human beings—bring with them a complex array of unique viewpoints, needs, capacities, and strengths. At the same time, they share certain fundamental qualities. The inherent need to grow, live, and develop in a positive direction, for example, is common to all learners. What best supports these inherent capacities and distinctive characteristics? To find out, we asked students and educators what they thought produced the highest levels of learning in not only academic areas but also personal, social, and vocational realms.”—from the Preface The Learner-Centered Classroom and School shows educators and administrators how they can create classrooms and schools that foster student motivation, learning, and achievement. The learner-centered approach provides a dual focus on both learner and learning. It focuses on learners by respecting them, trusting them to be responsible for their own learning, and designing practices that are sensitive to individual needs, abilities, and interests. It focuses on learning by designing practices that help students meet high academic standards in challenging, personally relevant, and important content areas. The book is filled with useful examples and practical suggestions for implementing learner-centered concepts in any school or classroom. It will help educators examine beliefs and assumptions related to learner-centered practices and make changes that enhance student motivation and achievement.

Instructional Assessment Of English Language Learners In The K 8 Classroom written by Diane K. Brantley and has been published by Allyn & Bacon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Education categories.
This classroom-ready resource provides teachers in grades K-8 with specific assessments that can be administered to English language learners within the regular classroom. Long overdue and with a focus on the needs of English language learners (ELLs) within the classroom, Instructional Assessment of English Language Learners is a unique book designed to teach readers the basic concepts of assessing English. Today's education courses place an increasing emphasis on the regular classroom teacher to instruct and assess English language learners. Yet, classroom teachers have few resources available to them in regard to assessing ELLs within their classrooms. This book helps readers master the assessments to be administered to English learners and cover a range of literacy skills deemed necessary for English language acquisition and reproduction, while also assessing the student's literacy skills in their primary language. The overarching goal of this book is to enable teachers to acquire a deep understanding of the value of instructional assessment for ELLs and the importance of evaluating the results to provide the students with immediate, appropriate and meaningful instruction. The book addresses the specific areas of language arts related to the development, acquisition, and reproduction of the English language: oral language development and vocabulary; concepts of print and the alphabetic strategies; word recognition and word identification strategies; reading fluency; reading comprehension; written language development and spelling; content area literacy; procedural knowledge; and problem-solving strategies. The strategies presented in this text are research-based and are known to increase reading comprehension for ELLs.

Implementing Standards Based Education written by Robert J. Marzano and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Education categories.
The purposes of this book are to help teachers understand the rationale and nature of the current emphasis on U.S. education on standards and to provide classroom teachers with guidance on the many ways the standards movement might affect their classrooms. Approaches to implementing standards may be organized into two general categories, indirect and direct. Indirect approaches are based on the assumption that even though student performance on standards is not directly tied to their performance in individual classes, teachers will naturally want to provide assistance to their students and will organize their classrooms accordingly. Teachers will usually choose the standards they will address in their classrooms. Direct approaches necessitate a change in classroom practice for teachers because the specific standards teachers must address are mandated. Section 2 considers indirect approaches, and section 3 considers direct approaches. Appendixes contain: (1) "Steps to Reasoning Processes"; (2) "Rubrics for Reasoning Processes"; (3) "Rubrics for Effective Communication Standards"; and (4) "Rubrics for Lifelong Learning Standards." (Contains 15 figures and 130 references.) (SLD)
