The coaching approach for educators is borrowed from the coaching world, where the skills of listening and asking questions are founded on the deeper skills of self-management, curiosity and non-judgement. The coaching approach has a broad range of applications. It applies to how teachers receive professional support and guidance from the educational leadership team, as much as it applies to speaking with students and their parents about motivation and academic progress. The coaching approach eases the educators' task of observing colleagues' lessons and having their lessons observed by other colleagues. The coaching approach applies most strongly to giving and receiving supportive feedback from colleagues. In this book, readers will learn how educators co-create their working relationships, observe lessons during the year and give continuous feedback as sustainably and effectively as possible.

Innovations encompass all phases of teacher education, with emphases on induction activities for new teachers and inservice activities which create new roles for experienced ones; they involve collaborative, integrative, reflective, experiential, and inquiry-oriented practices; and they emphasize teachers as leaders in their own development and schools as learning places for all. Complex networking of institutional structures enriches school-based teacher development; other innovations aim to improve teacher education practices, and change working and learning conditions; some are guided by a vision of teachers as reformers. The report concentrates more on the state of innovative activity, with only general references to the prevalence and impact of these changes.

Purpose. Research suggests that releasing teachers from the isolation of their classrooms and building collaborative cultures is an effective way to reculture and restructure schools. The purpose of this study was to add to the knowledge base by exploring how teacher practices are influenced by the combination of collegial coaching and reflective practice; and by investigating the effects of collegial coaching and reflective practice on teacher attitudes and perceptions about professional growth. This qualitative study provided detailed descriptions of the interactions among three groups of teacher coaching partners and the principal/researcher as they reflected on their professional practice. Procedures. In this case study, the principal/researcher and six teachers in a middle school engaged in a structured reflective process. The teachers engaged in collegial coaching to focus on the contexts of teaching and to consider teaching from the perspective of professional inquiry. Prior to the study, baseline data were collected in the forms of (1) videotaping of classroom instruction, (2) reflective journaling on teaching practices, and (3) current performance-based evaluations. The baseline data were compared to data sources collected during the study to determine whether change had occurred. Data collected during the study included: (1) videotapes of collegial teams engaged in reflective dialogue and conferencing, (2) journal entries following conferencing and peer observations, and (3) two interviews. Effects and conclusions. Inferences based on the three major assumptions of the study were supported with evidence from the data sources: (1) that changes may be evident in teachers' practices as a result of collegial coaching and reflective practice; (2) reculturing may occur in the school setting as teachers work collaboratively utilizing collegial coaching and reflective practice; and (3) reflective practice and collegial coaching may result in teachers acquiring positive attitudes and perceptions about professional growth opportunities. The findings in this study suggested that collegial coaching and reflective practice created an environment conducive to or receptive to change that resulted in professional growth for teachers.
