This book conceptualises the ways in which video has created a pedagogy for current learning and teaching practices, disciplines, and environments. It brings together the concepts and practice of video as pedagogy by providing theoretical discussion and practical guidance and recommendations on the use of video in learning and teaching, drawing on a wide range of case studies including nursing education, business education, architectural education, engineering, mathematics, physical education, science education, and screen production. Part I focuses on ‘video, students and learning’ and Part II on ‘video, teachers and practice’. The book covers various perspectives on the concept and use of video in learning and teaching: developing students’ practical skills and knowledge; using video for teaching culturally sensitive topics and cultural competency; for feedback, reflection, training and professional development; making and producing videos for educational purposes, with discussion on techniques, devices, software and strategies.

The history of methods of observation illustrates a gradual development from lay observation to systematic scientific observation. Over the past centuries, observing scientists have learned to take advantage of various research tools. Just as natural scientists came to appreciate the aid of the microscope to observe very small objects and telescopes to observe very distant objects, we have come to see video technology as a tool for social scientists to observe phenomena that are too complex to be studied by the naked eye. The investigative potential of such video studies lies in the fact that complex phenomena and events captured on video are available for analysis that can focus ex-post facto on various aspects of the material under investigation. Video study is a complex methodological approach, which enables the employing of various strategies, methods or techniques for generating, collecting and analysing video data, i.e. audiovisual data grounded in rich situational contexts. The book is structured in three sections which comprise chapters that focus on a specific power of video technology in classroom research. The chapters in section I focus on the power of video to describe the dynamics of teaching and learning in the classroom. They present various video studies conducted in the past fifteen years that aimed to describe the practices of teaching. The chapters in section II focus on the use of video in investigating the effects of teaching on student learning. They present approaches that build on video studies in order to link data about classroom processes with data about learning outcomes. The chapters in section III discuss possibilities offered by the use of video in professional development of teachers. Combining video analysis with the well-known Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model, this book offers teacher educators a fresh perspective and a new tool for supporting teachers’ learning and reflection. The clearly articulated and useful framework shifts the focus away from children and toward teachers’ thinking about their own teaching practice. Interwoven with practical examples of the framework in use, this book identifies ways that teachers and teacher educators can foster more productive kinds of reflection about video-recorded classroom interactions and support preservice and inservice teachers. Offering key tools such as templates for reflection, video viewing guides, self-analysis checklists, and activities, this book moves the field forward and establishes video reflection and the GRR process as critical tools for teacher reflection, professional development, and effective teaching and learning.

The introduction of digital technology to video use has opened up new opportunities for raising the quality of teaching and learning. This book provides the first integrated account of how digital video can be used to develop teaching competence. It shows not only how using video can help teachers move towards more dialogic forms of teaching and learning, but also how such change benefits pupils’ learning and behaviour. Based on extensive literature reviews this book provides an overview of "visual teacher learning" and summarises what is known about instructional improvements that teachers can achieve by engaging in it. These reviews and the author’s empirical studies explain the activities, processes and organisational conditions needed for implementing visual teacher learning in teacher education and professional development. The book concludes with practical resources for practitioners incorporating the lessons drawn from theory and research.
