Marx’s analysis of the commodity results in his conception of Capital as substance in the form of alienation. While Hegel claims that substance can be understood as the realization of freedom, Marx shows this freedom to be alienated labor: abstract labor, which Marx identifies as the capitalist conception of value. The book clarifies why Marx’s so-called materialist criticism of Hegel can be conceived of as an immanent criticism of Hegel: Marx’s criticism explicates that the realization of freedom in the Philosophy of Right contradicts Hegel’s basic point of departure. The adequate realization of freedom not only leads to an alternative (non-alienated) conception of value, but also explains why this conception of value is fully compatible with the free market.

This influential collection of essays focuses on the elusive concept of "value," and aims to answer the question "Why is Marx's theory of value so important?" Aboo Aumeeruddy and Ramon Tortajada introduce the key interpretive debates surrounding "value form," leading to seminal essays by Jairus Banaji and Chris Arthur. The labour theory of value is interrogated by Geoffrey Kay and Athar Hussain, and Diane Elson concludes with an argument for the importance of Marx's "Value Theory of Labour." These incisive and erudite texts provide a crucial introduction to Marxist political economy, as well as advancing critical arguments for those already well versed in the field.

Isaak Ilyich Rubin (1886-1937) was a Soviet economist who participated in the Russian Revolution and was a researcher at the Marx-Engels Institute Though his ideas were suppressed by the Soviet Union and he was eventually killed after being accused of Trotskyism, his ideas have since been rehabilitated within modern Marxism. Essays on Marx's Theory of Value (1924) emphasizes the importance of Marx's theory of commodity fetishism within the labor theory of value. It also argues that Marx's mature economic work represented the culmination of his lifetime project to understand how human creative power is shaped by social structures. He also discusses commodity production as a mere theoretical abstraction that only explains one aspect of a developed capitalist economy. The concept of value, as understood by Rubin, cannot exist without the other elements of a full-blown capitalist economy: money, capital, the existence of a proletariat, and so on. This Radical Reprint by Pattern Books is made to be accessible and as close to only manufacturing cost as possible.

Economist, theorist and historian, the author suggests a definition of political economy which has nothing in common with the definition of economics. He states that political economy deals with human working activity, not from the standpoint of its technical methods and instruments of labor, but from the standpoint of its social form.

First published in 1865, 'Value, Price, and Profit' was originally given as a speech by Karl Marx, a German philosopher, critic of political economy, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist and socialist revolutionary. He is one of the most influential social theorists and political philosophers of the 19th century. Marx sought to reveal the economic patterns underpinning the capitalist mode of production, in contrast to classical political economists such as Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Say, David Ricardo and John Stuart Mill. This speech expands on his ideas regarding the relationship between wages and profit. Marx argues that workers are responsible for forming the value that leads to profit and they are entitled to share in it through increased wages. Marx's theories remain widely studied for their relevance and insight into the problems and inequalities that continue to exist in modern economic systems.

Karl Marx's "The Capital" (Volumes 1-3) is an exhaustive critique of political economy, particularly concentrating on the capitalist mode of production. Written in a rigorous and analytical style, the text combines historical analysis with logical examination, unveiling the intricate workings of capitalism and its inherent contradictions. Marx dissects the processes of commodity production, labor value, and capital accumulation, utilizing a dialectical method that situates economic phenomena within broader social and historical contexts. The work not only addresses the mechanics of capitalism but also anticipates the socioeconomic transformations that could arise from its own internal crises. Karl Marx, a philosopher, economist, and revolutionary socialist, was deeply affected by the social injustices and economic disparities of the 19th century. His experiences as a journalist in Germany and later in France and England illuminated the struggles of the working class. These insights, alongside his collaboration with Friedrich Engels and influence from Hegelian dialectics, culminated in "The Capital," where he synthesized his theoretical frameworks into a penetrating analysis of capitalist society. This seminal work is essential for readers seeking to understand the foundations of modern economic thought and social theory. "The Capital" not only provides profound insights into the nature of exploitation and class struggle but also challenges readers to critically engage with the economic structures that shape their lives. It is highly recommended for scholars, activists, and anyone interested in the dynamics of power and oppression in contemporary society.

Professor Weeks proposes that the key to Marx's critique of capitalist society is the labor theory of value. A commodity-producing society, he argues, necessarily gives rise to a capitalist society, so that commodity production and the exploitation of labor are inseparably linked.
