Politics and the Twitter Revolution: How Tweets Influence the Relationship between Political Leaders and the Public by John H. Parmelee and Shannon L. Bichard is the first comprehensive examination of how Twitter is used politically. Surveys and in-depth interviews with political Twitter users answer several important questions, including: Who follows the political leaders on Twitter, and why? How persuasive are political tweets? Is political Twitter use good for democracy? These and other questions are answered from theoretical perspectives, such as uses and gratifications, word-of-mouth communication, selective exposure, innovation characteristics, and the continuity-discontinuity framework. In addition, content analysis and frame analysis illustrate how political leaders' tweets frame their policies and personalities. The findings in Politics and the Twitter Revolution show Twitter to be surprisingly influential on political discourse. Twitter has caused major changes in how people engage politically. Followers regularly take actions that are requested in leaders' tweets, and, in many cases, leaders' tweets shape followers' political views more than friends and family. Other findings raise concerns. For some, Twitter use contributes to political polarization, and there is frequently a disconnect between what followers expect from leaders on Twitter and what those leaders are giving them.

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: 72% (Distinction), City University London (School of Informatics and School of Arts and Social Sciences), course: MSc Information, Communication and Society, language: English, abstract: This dissertation examines tweet content from key periods of the uprisings in Egypt and Syria of 2011 and 2012, generally known as the “Arab Spring”. Some authors and the main-stream media have suggested that these uprisings were significantly influenced and organised by Twitter and subsequently referred to them as “Twitter Revolution”. Other authors have strongly opposed this idea and attributed it to self-deception in the light of marvellous inventions of the Western World. They have suggested Twitter was predominantly used as an information-sharing network. In an effort to contribute data to this debate, this dissertation analyses tweet content from three different observation periods; two tweet datasets were collected from other academics and third one was crawled from the Twitter API; this process made use of the crawling tool cURL and the database software mongoDB. The combined tweet dataset contained about 1.9 million tweets out of which a sample of 1945 tweets was drawn. This sample was then evaluated in a quantitative content analysis according to a coding manual. These codes were entered into the statistical analysis software SPSS, in which they were also processed. This study found that in the context of these uprisings, Twitter was indeed used more as an information-sharing tool and only to a relatively small fraction for organisational purposes. This result does not negate the possibility of a mobilising effect of that small fraction. A further, central result is that almost every second tweet contained a hyperlink and that most of these lead to visual stimuli.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Earth Science / Geography - Geopolitics, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences), language: English, abstract: When the people in the Arab world started to go out on the streets in December 2010 for the very first time for years, no one of the demonstrators and protesters who were fighting for their rights to live in a better world, in peace, freedom and democracy expected that level of change as a result of their behaviour. Those inconceivable aftermaths did not exist neither in the minds of the people in Tunisia, the nucleus of the Arab Spring, nor in the minds of the people who were joining that wave of protest country by country afterwards. Before that uprising arrived Libya, which is in the focus of attention here, in February 2011, the revolt expanded over the Middle East and North Africa. Never before mass media, including radio, television and, especially the internet (with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), was taken such a significant role during uprisings since the end of the year 2010. No one of the participants, who were involved in this uprising, no one of the politicians, no one of the citizens in the Western world, no one of the former leader of those regimes and no one of the media companies could count on this great measure of transformation in the Arab world. States were dissolved, former inhuman leaders of a regime were captured or killed and new fundaments of a modern, democratic and liberalized nation were created by the people or the opposition of those long lasting dictatorial and authoritarian leaders.

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: A., The American University in Cairo, language: English, abstract: Let’s get one thing straight, The Egyptian revolution was not a Facebook revolution. Was Facebook immensely important? Yes. Was it the catalyst? Maybe. But that is as far as those assumptions can go. Social media today has no longer become just another pastime. Websites like twitter and facebook have now become a way of living rather than a hobby or interest. Ask yourself this, why was the government’s first plan of defense to shut down the internet connection and phone lines? Why was a people’s revolution unprecedented in the past given the simple term of a “Facebook Revolution”? To answer these questions one must look at the power and momentum of social media in Egypt, the transformation of social media like facebook and twitter from places of expression to sites of political organizing. To understand this revolution one must engage the political situation that bloggers and mass public alike have been surviving for so long.

Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Ethnologie / Volkskunde, Note: 2,0, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Institut für Ethnologie), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Einleitung “There is now a menace which is called Twitter. The best examples of lies can be found there. To me, social media is the worst menace to society.”
