Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Earth Science / Geography - Geopolitics, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences), language: English, abstract: When the people in the Arab world started to go out on the streets in December 2010 for the very first time for years, no one of the demonstrators and protesters who were fighting for their rights to live in a better world, in peace, freedom and democracy expected that level of change as a result of their behaviour. Those inconceivable aftermaths did not exist neither in the minds of the people in Tunisia, the nucleus of the Arab Spring, nor in the minds of the people who were joining that wave of protest country by country afterwards. Before that uprising arrived Libya, which is in the focus of attention here, in February 2011, the revolt expanded over the Middle East and North Africa. Never before mass media, including radio, television and, especially the internet (with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), was taken such a significant role during uprisings since the end of the year 2010. No one of the participants, who were involved in this uprising, no one of the politicians, no one of the citizens in the Western world, no one of the former leader of those regimes and no one of the media companies could count on this great measure of transformation in the Arab world. States were dissolved, former inhuman leaders of a regime were captured or killed and new fundaments of a modern, democratic and liberalized nation were created by the people or the opposition of those long lasting dictatorial and authoritarian leaders.

This study examines tweet content from key periods of the uprisings in Egypt and Syria of 2011 and 2012, generally known as the “Arab Spring”. Some authors and the mainstream media have suggested that these uprisings were significantly influenced and organised by Twitter and subsequently referred to them as “Twitter Revolution”. Other authors have strongly opposed this idea and attributed it to self-deception in the light of marvellous inventions of the Western World. They have suggested Twitter was predominantly used as an information-sharing network. In an effort to contribute data to this debate, this study analyses tweet content from three different observation periods; two tweet datasets were collected from other academics and a third one was crawled from the Twitter API; this process made use of the crawling tool cURL and the database software mongoDB. The combined tweet dataset contained about 1.9 million tweets out of which a sample of 1945 tweets was drawn. This sample was then evaluated in a quantitative content analysis according to a coding manual. These codes were entered into the statistical analysis software SPSS, in which they were also processed.

The diversification and politicisation of the mass media within itself and also societal pressure created by the mass media at a social level have caused changes to our social structure. The first change began with the contextual changes to the mass media, and this change led to visible changes in societies. That transformation has almost erased the distinction between the private and the public spheres, especially as social media has entered our lives. Now, things that occur in the private sphere are easily transported into the public sphere and others' private spheres. Therefore, the virtual public sphere has emerged through social media and all other practices on the internet. It appears that activist movements have either been founded in the cyberworld or that existing activist movements have been strengthened by finding supporters via social media and blogs. The public sphere and activist movements that come into existence in the virtual environment, such as social media, are a new experience in terms of societies, and they are the sign of how the future will be shaped. It is obvious that social media is now an integral part of our daily lives. It is a place where political and secular ideas spread. In this social area each individual has the opportunity to make political statements as if they were standing in an agora. Shared content represents the position within the virtual life that individuals have built for themselves. This study defines the virtual public sphere together with virtual activism and the network society in the light of the public sphere - private sphere debates.

Journalism At The Crossroads written by Margaret Simons and has been published by Scribe Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-07 with Social Science categories.
A lively, spirited, and stirring critique of what is wrong with the Australian press — and how we might go about fixing it. As newspaper subscription-rates decline, and mastheads lament what appears to be a broken business model, the future of journalism is uncertain. Yet, in an age of spin and the sideshow syndrome, quality journalism is more essential than ever before. How do we resolve the contradictions, and map out a path forward? And what do we mean by ‘quality’? As we face new, digital models for journalism, what might be worth preserving about the old models? How can journalists embrace new forms of media and technology, and engage more directly with their readers? Can journalism continue to contribute to a vibrant and robust democracy? In Journalism at the Crossroads, journalist and media commentator Dr Margaret Simons explores the challenges and opportunities facing journalists as they confront the digital revolution and grapple with the changing role of journalism. Simons considers the role of the journalist in this new media landscape, why we still need quality news reporting, how new technologies can enhance traditional reporting, ways in which journalists and citizens can work together to break stories, and how media organisations can reinvigorate their newsrooms by engaging directly with the community. The imperative to think about new ways of journalism has arrived, and it is time for all of us — citizens and journalists alike — to become involved in this vital debate.

Praise for The Crowdsourced Performance Review: "Take advantage of the technology and data available to you and turn the dreaded performance review into a powerful force for decision-making and culture-building by using the methods outlined in this clear and clever guide." --Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive "Social technologies aren't just changing how people interact, they're fundamentally changing how businesses must engage with people inside and outside their organization. In The Crowdsourced Performance Review, Mosley shows HR and business leaders why a 'groundswell' approach for employee recognition is the key to driving better employee performance. This is one of the most innovative enterprise uses of crowdsourcing I've seen." --Charlene Li, founder of Altimeter Group, author of Open Leadership, and coauthor of Groundswell "In what is easily the most comprehensive and provocative Globoforce book to date, Mosley lays out a clear vision for how modern recognition systems can be integrated with performance management. This is one of the most interesting, innovative, and potentially important new approaches to performance management that I have seen in many years of working on this topic." --Gerald Ledford, Senior Research Scientist, Center for Effective Organizations, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California "The Crowdsourced Performance Review should be at the top of every HR professional's reading list. It shows convincingly why the traditional performance review doesn't work and how social recognition is the key to a performance system that actually makes an impact." --Kevin Kruse, Forbes Leadership columnist and bestselling author of Employee Engagement 2.0 "As a pioneer in multirater feedback, I love Eric's new application! Social media comes to visit the performance appraisal. Many minds can be better than one! Read this and find out how." --Marshall Goldsmith, author of New York Times bestsellers MOJO and What Got You Here Won't Get You There Fix the Performance Review with the Wisdom of Crowds! Today's most successful companies are transforming their predictable "one-way" review processes into dynamic, collaborative systems that apply the latest social technologies. Instead of a one-time annual evaluation of performance, managers and employees receive collective feedback from everyone across their company. It's all achieved through crowdsourcing, and it generates more accurate, actionable results than traditional methods. With The Crowdsourced Performance Review, you'll create a review system that gathers the feedback of many, so you can make better, more informed decisions. And this new model is simpler than you think. It's based on three innovations: CROWDSOURCING: Applying the same techniques that companies like Apple, Angie's List, and Zagat use to inform customers, you can gather the same kind of data to inform managers. SOCIAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES: The most revolutionary communication tools since the telephone, these technologies have singlehandedly created a new language of business. ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE: When managed well, it's one of the most effective tools for building and maintaining a competitive advantage. These three assets come together for the purpose of evaluating performance in the practice of social recognition--a system in which all employees recognize each other's great work on a daily basis. Social recognition creates engagement, energy, and even happiness in a company--leading to the ultimate goal of a Positivity-Dominated Workplace.

In a coherent and clear framework, Ben shows how falling dominoes in a world of fast markets and uniquely new possibili¬ties creates a market landscape we might never have prepared for.” —Vineer Bhansali, Managing Director, Portfolio Manager, PIMCO “At some point after getting your financial life in order, you may well have money to invest. Where should you put it, especially when worldwide markets are in flux? Ben Emons, a senior vice president at Pimco, the investment company that runs the world’s largest bond fund, addresses that question in The Financial Domino Effect.” —The New York Times “A great book; it’s a very smart book. This is not general reading but it’s something accessible to anyone." —Tom Keene, Bloommberg Radio When a major political or financial event happens, the impact disseminates like a contagion across markets and sovereign boundaries. Like a row of toppling dominoes, the effect of the crisis accelerates along various paths. The Financial Domino Effect enables you to benefit from these moving catastrophes and helps you navigate current changes taking place in governmental and financial systems. At the heart of this progressive book is a powerful framework for analyzing and interpreting the variety of connected influences in the three main domino effects categories—social-political, economic, and financial. This crisis is particularly unique because it is a domino effect of three kinds—social, economic, and financial—and it has not fully played out. This timely guide takes you step by step through the crisis to a final analysis. In the end, you will be prepared to plan for the myriad of far-reaching consequences and balance your portfolio. Financial crises will happen with high frequency. The Financial Domino Effect helps you stay on top when it all goes down.
