River Channel Restoration summarises the current state of the art for river channel, floodplain and catchment restoration, and provides practical guiding principles for river managers. Fundamental principles are illustrated with case studies and experiences in a wide range of settings, principally Northern Europe and North America. An objective is to guide river managers away from trial and error approaches to appraisal and design. A multi-functional approach to restoration projects is needed, encompassing disciplines such as hydrology, hydraulics, geomorphology, water quality, ecology and landscape. Although concentrating on abiotic factors, this book will be of considerable interest to all disciplines with an interest in restoration. Contributors include university scientists, researchers, and practitioners from regulatory and consultancy organisations.

Fisheries and natural resource managers and policymakers need more efficient procedures for identifying sources of variability in ecosystems (natural and managed) and assessing uncertainties of managing and making decisions for developing and implementing river restoration strategies. This book seeks to integrate perspectives on variability of physical and biological functions and concepts of uncertainty in natural and managed systems, into strategies for renewing and conserving river ecosystems. The book explores approaches to understanding and communicating the processes contributing to the variability of different types of river systems, and to assessing major sources of uncertainty in natural and managed river ecosystems.

Brisbane?s annual Riversymposium plays a unique role, providing an exchange and synthesis of river management knowledge and practice. In keeping with its goal of addressing all aspects of river management, the 2001 Riversymposium featured several key topics and river management case studies. From the wide-ranging and lively programme 31 articles have been selected for these proceedings. Following the keynote address there are sections covering: Human Impacts on River Health; Rivers as Urban Landscapes - the Renaissance of the Waterfront; The Economics of River Management; Sustainable River Management; Community Involvement in River Management; Environmental Flows. River Restoration River restoration initiatives are now widespread across the world. The research efforts undertaken to support them are increasingly interdisciplinary, focusing on ecological, chemical, physical as well as societal issues. River Restoration: Political, Social, and Economic Perspectives provides a comprehensive overview of research in the field of river restoration in humanities and the social sciences. It illustrates how, in the last thirty years or so, such approaches have evolved and strengthened within the restoration sciences. The scientific community working in this domain has structured itself, often regionally and circumstantially, to critically assess and improve restoration policies and practices. As a research field, river restoration tackles three thematic axes: Human-river interactions – especially perceptions and practices of rivers, and how these interactions can be changed by restoration projects Political processes, with a particular interest in governance and decision-making, and a specific emphasis on the question of public participation in restoration projects Evaluation of the social and economic benefits of river restoration River Restoration: Political, Social, and Economic Perspectives encompasses these three topics, and more, to provide the reader with the most up-to-date and holistic view of this constantly evolving area. The book will be of particular interest to human and social scientists, biophysical scientists (hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists), environmental scientists, public policy makers, design or planning officers, and anyone working in the field of river restoration.

Finding The Voice Of The River written by Gary J. Brierley and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-27 with Social Science categories.
This book addresses societal relationships to river systems, highlighting many unexplored possibilities in how we know and manage our rivers. Brierley contends that although we have good scientific understanding of rivers, with remarkable prospect for profound improvements to river condition, management applications greatly under-deliver. He conceptualizes approaches to river repair in two very different ways: Medean (competitive) and Gaian (cooperative). Rather than ‘managing’ rivers to achieve particular anthropogenic goals (the former option), this book adopts a more-than-human approach to ‘living with living rivers’ (the latter option), applying a river rights framework that conceptualizes rivers as sentient entities. Chapters build on significant experience across many parts of the world, emphasizing the diverse array of river attributes and relationships to be protected and the wide range of problems to be addressed. Although the book has an environmental focus, it is framed as an argument in popular philosophy, contemplating the agency of rivers as place-beings. It will be of great value to academics, students and general readers interested in protecting river systems.
