The Black Sea is a unique water environment, with major European and Asian rivers flowing into it, yet only the narrow and shallow Bosphorus strait providing an outflow. In consequence the Sea is the recipient of major anthropogenic impacts. Since the water pollution and related environmental problems are not solely from the coastal areas but also originate from the associated river basins, it has become clear that solutions must be sought in a more general context, covering all the sea catchment. The third in this series of conferences on Environmental Protection Technologies for Coastal Areas again brought together researchers, managers and other experts to address the environmental problems and water management of the Black Sea, its coastal areas and catchment basin.
