This volume of essays examines the problem of mind, looking at how the problem has appeared to neuroscientists (in the widest sense) from classical antiquity through to contemporary times. Beginning with a look at ventricular neuropsychology in antiquity, this book goes on to look at Spinozan ideas on the links between mind and body, Thomas Willis and the foundation of Neurology, Hooke’s mechanical model of the mind and Joseph Priestley’s approach to the mind-body problem. The volume offers a chapter on the 19th century Ottoman perspective on western thinking. Further chapters trace the work of nineteenth century scholars including George Henry Lewes, Herbert Spencer and Emil du Bois-Reymond. The book covers significant work from the twentieth century, including an examination of Alfred North Whitehead and the history of consciousness, and particular attention is given to the development of quantum consciousness. Chapters on slavery and the self and the development of an understanding of Dualism bring this examination up to date on the latest 21st century work in the field. At the heart of this book is the matter of how we define the problem of consciousness itself: has there been any progress in our understanding of the working of mind and brain? This work at the interface between science and the humanities will appeal to experts from across many fields who wish to develop their understanding of the problem of consciousness, including scholars of Neuroscience, Behavioural Science and the History of Science.

The Quantum Brain: Neuroscience and Quantum Physics "The Quantum Brain" explores the relationship between human consciousness and quantum physics, challenging traditional neuroscience theories by suggesting that quantum processes may influence the mind and the brain. The work examines how concepts such as superposition, entanglement, and the collapse of the wave function might be related to the way we think and perceive reality. Through in-depth analysis, the work offers a new perspective on consciousness, proposing that it may be more than just a simple biological function. Expanding the discussions on the intersection between the mind and quantum physics, "The Quantum Brain" investigates the role of conscious observation in the collapse of quantum probabilities and its implications for understanding reality. By delving into the world of subatomic physics, the book suggests that the human brain might function as a quantum computer, capable of performing complex calculations and directly influencing physical events. Issues such as free will, intuition, and even healing through thought are explored from a new vantage point, providing an intriguing read for those seeking to understand the frontiers of the mind and science.

In this stimulating and timely book, Amit Goswami, PhD, shatters the widely popular belief held by Western science that matter is the primary "stuff" of creation and proposes instead that consciousness is the true foundation of all we know and perceive. His explanation of quantum physics for lay readers, called "a model of clarity" by Kirkus Reviews, sets the stage for a voyage of discovery through the common ground of science and religion, the entwined nature of mind and body, and our interconnectedness with all of creation.

The brain is an extraordinary machine, perhaps the most complex known to man. It guides thought, emotions, and movement. However, the brain is not the "mind." What we call the mind seems to go beyond the pure functioning of neurons. The mind is not just mechanical. It is something that lives on associations, memories, and dreams—an intangible dimension that eludes definition but which we recognize as our essence. And then there is consciousness. Consciousness is not the "brain" or the "mind." So what is consciousness? It is an idea that has fascinated philosophers and scientists for millennia. For some, consciousness coincides with chemical and electrical impulses in the brain. For others, it is nature's deepest mystery, something that science cannot fully describe. In the 17th century, the philosopher Descartes suggested a radical distinction between mind and body: "I think, therefore I am." But thinking does not mean understanding. The true origin of consciousness remains elusive. In the 20th century, scientists such as physicist Roger Penrose and anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff raised an even more surprising question. Could consciousness have something to do with quantum physics? Their ideas could forever change the way we interpret our place in the universe. According to them, quantum processes could occur within the neural microtubules in the brain, suggesting that consciousness is not just a biological product, but a phenomenon that is intertwined with the fundamental laws of the universe. Let's imagine for a moment: if they were right, this would mean that consciousness is not just here, in our minds, but is linked to something bigger, perhaps to the very structure of the cosmos. Could there be an invisible network connecting the minds of all living beings? Or perhaps consciousness is a door that our brains make accessible, but which exists independently of us? Maybe our brain is a "receiving antenna" connected to a universal consciousness? The difference between the brain, the mind, and consciousness is what gives rise to these questions. The brain is physical, tangible. It is an intricate network of cells and energy. The mind is more subtle—it is immaterial, yet evident. Consciousness, on the other hand, is the great mystery: it is the "feeling" that allows us to be aware of what we experience. Finally, quantum consciousness expands the horizon even further, pushing the boundary toward infinity. But this story of science and philosophy is not just a modern one. The Chandogya Upanishads, ancient Hindu texts, write: "The entire universe is within the being, and the being is the universe." Even today, neuroscientists, physicists, and thinkers continue this dialogue. Carl Sagan states: "The human brain is the most complex and organized object in the known universe." This book starts with the anatomy of the brain to discover the wonders of how it works. Following the narrative, we will investigate the mind: how does it arise? Is it a product of brain activity or does it exist independently? Next, we will explore consciousness in all its dimensions, from philosophical implications to scientific challenges. Finally, we will arrive at the most daring terrain: quantum consciousness. It is a theory, of course, but it is also an invitation to think bigger. Through a journey that combines physics, metaphysics, and philosophy, we will meet some of the greatest thinkers in history. Men and women who dared to challenge the limits of knowledge to better understand what it means to be alive. One thing is certain: by peering into the depths of our being, we cannot help but look up at the sky, wondering if the answers are not already written in the unfathomable infinity beyond the stars.

The ministry of casting out demons is either entirely dismissed on one hand or misused and abused on the other. A closed-system natural worldview utterly rejects the notion of a spirit world with spirit beings. To the other extreme, some shortsighted deliverance ministries reject the validity of the health professions and identify every problem in the life of the believer as demonic. The theology of these ministries fails to account for the power of the cross and its daily application in the life of the believer as the normal way in which God delivers from sin and evil. All challenges in the life of the believer do not necessitate a deliverance session. Unleashed! is a book that offers a balanced perspective on these matters, including an instrument that can be used to assist in discerning the probable need for deliverance. The C1-13 instrument is revolutionary, transcending the usual inventories by applying variables that are key factors to differentiating degrees of demonic influence. The instrument is also distinct due to its integrative approach that cross-references the work of other professional fields to arrive at a comprehensive picture of the problem and thus a more extensive and effective treatment.
