Books on intellectual development typically separate development into distinct developmental periods: the formation of intelligence and basic cognitive skills that occurs until adolescence, and the maintenance, decline, or improvement of these intellectual skills across the adult life span. Robert Sternberg and Cynthia Berg have integrated research on these two development periods, by bringing together authors that provide a comprehensive overview to the major approaches to intellectual development. The authors draw on six different approaches to intellectual development through childhood or adulthood: psychometric, Piagetian, new-Piagetian, information- processing, learning, and the contextual perspectives. Originally published in 1977, this volume was intended to provide a relatively elementary and clear overview of some of the more important approaches to social psychology at the time. The philosophical foundations of cognitive development can be traced back to ancient Greece, where figures like Plato and Aristotle pondered the nature of knowledge and learning. Additionally, the work of Wilhelm Wundt laid the groundwork for experimental psychology, highlighting the importance of controlled environments in the study of cognition. By the late 19th century, the scientific community began to focus on developmental psychology, recognizing the importance of understanding cognitive processes across the lifespan.
