Since that time, economists have struggled to develop systematic explanations for what caused the sudden, rapid increase, why the economy keeps growing, and why the rate of growth varies in different time periods and nations. In this book, F. M. Scherer traces the evolution of economic growth theory from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Emphasizing technological change as the most crucial dynamic force for growth, Scherer analyzes early hypotheses that paid little attention to new technologies, follows the emergence of theories that increasingly emphasized technological change, and reviews the current state of economic growth theory. "This book is the first of its kind to use Austrian subjectivism to analyze issues in economic development. Unlike scholars in mainstream neoclassical economics who explain economic development by quantitative growth models, this book attempts to understand economic progress in human agency perspective. In this approach, human agency is placed at the centre of economic analysis. This book begins with a review of the theories of economic development in the history of Austrian economics, with the intention of extending the contributions of major Austrian economists to development economics. After pointing out the weaknesses in the orthodox neoclassical approach to economic growth, the book then puts forward a subjectivist methodology which integrates the contributions of Max Weber, Alfred Schutz and Austrian Economists to interpret economic phenomena and policies. This chapter also serves as a methodological foundation for arguments elaborated in subsequent chapters. The rest of the book discusses important issues in economic development, namely, entrepreneurial process, national capabilities, innovation, trade, government, transition and catching up strategies for firms in latecomer economies. The book ends with concluding remarks and a proposal for a new research agenda in economic development. This book is well written, free from mathematics and is highly readable. Considering the new possibilities offered by endogenous growth models and the improvement of data information, new variables have been introduced in the analysis of economic growth. But in spite of this important effort to develop a wider and more complete perspective of economic growth process, other kinds of relations and factors must be included. And this is the main goal of this book. In the next chapters, authors analyse a set of variables or factors that the new perspective of the economic growth must include and the canonical models don't consider. The goal is to show that there are not only quantitative but also qualitative variables and factors that are growth enhancing. Traditionally, for instance, literature has studied the effects of income distribution on growth, but it does not consider environmental constraints in the process. Or it is important to consider the effects of social capital not just physical capital or human capital on the economic growth process. The role of the institutions is very important in this area. Therefore, the authors determine the effects of these variables on economic growth process and show new possibilities to the policy makers in the design of their economic policies.
