Significant gender disparities in pay are amongst the most resilient features of labour markets. Even though the gender pay gap has narrowed in some places, women, on average, continue to work for a lower pay than men. This gender pay gap has many causes and sex discrimination in remuneration is one of them. For an objective and fair assessment of jobs, evaluation methods must be free from gender bias. This step-by-step guide sets out the various methodological components of the process and explains the criteria, which should be met in order to avoid discriminatory practices. It can be adapted to different economic and organizational contexts and to large and small enterprises. The guide is aimed at workers' and employers' organizations, officers of Equal Opportunity Bodies, human resource managers, gender specialists and pay equity practitioners responsible for implementing a pay equity program

The new world of work has created unprecedented challenges for human resource practitioners. This book prompts exciting conversations on the question of: "What is the role of job evaluation".With the developing concepts of blended work, work from anywhere and contingent workers, job evaluation systems will need some careful thought. One size and approach may not suit all situations and suggestions are offered on how to deal with these differing situations. The next domino after job evaluation is often remuneration, because pay scales are attached to the grades. Equal pay for work of equal value is probably one of the biggest focus points globally and clarity is offered in this book. The vertical pay gap and horizontal pay gap sometimes stem from the remuneration philosophy around pay scale design. This book clarifies how to do job evaluation in a changing world, how to develop pay scales and how to achieve equal pay for work of equal value. -- Publisher's description.

In order to determine whether methods of job analysis and classification currently used are biased by traditional sex stereotypes or other factors, a committee assessed formal systems of job evaluation and other methods currently employed in the private and public sectors for establishing the comparability of jobs and their levels of compensation. A review of sociological and economic literature shows that some differences in the characteristics of workers and in jobs do form a legitimate basis for wage differentials. Nevertheless, there exists a pervasiveness of occupational and job segregation by sex. Given the current operation of the labor market and the existence of a variety of factors that permit the persistence of earning differentials between men and women (e.g., labor market segmentation, job segregation, and employment practices), it would seem that intentional and unintentional discriminatory elements enter into the determination of wages and are not likely to disappear. Use of a job evaluation system is one possible remedy to this situation. While the subjectivity of job evaluation makes job evaluations less than perfect vehicles for resolving pay disputes, they can serve to identify potential wage discrimination. (MN)
