Intimacy written by Christopher Lauer and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-25 with Philosophy categories.

An important contribution to the burgeoning field of the ethics of recognition, this book examines the contradictions inherent in the very concept of intimacy. Working with a wide variety of philosophical and literary sources, it warns against measuring our relationships against ideal standards, since there is no consummate form of intimacy. After analyzing ten major ways that we aim to establish intimacy with one another, including gift-giving, touching, and fetishes, the book concludes that each fails on its own terms, since intimacy wants something that is impossible. The very concept of intimacy is a superlative one; it aims not just for closeness, but for a closeness beyond closeness. Nevertheless, far from a pessimistic diagnosis of the human condition, this is a meditation on how to live intimately in a world in which intimacy is impossible. Rather than contenting itself with a deconstructive approach, it proposes to treat intimacy dialectically. For all its contradictions, it shows intimacy is central to how we understand ourselves and our relations to others.

Mediated Intimacy written by Meg-John Barker and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-27 with Social Science categories.

Mediated Intimacy looks at contemporary sex and relationship advice, exploring how our intimate lives are shaped through different media, from manuals and magazines to television and Twitter. By exploring how intimacy is constructed through different media texts, the authors consider which ideas and practices these changing forms of 'sexpertise' open up, and which they close down. The book reveals the intimate operation of power in mediated advice, how words and images, stories and sound can work to shore up social injustice. It critically engages with the ideas of choice and responsibility in sex self-help, arguing that these can obscure and/or justify oppression, even if they're sometimes experienced as empowering and/or pleasurable. This bold and incisive book provides a radical challenge to the assumptions underlying the sex advice industry, and presents a critical, collaborative and consensual vision for sex advice of the future.

From Impasse To Intimacy written by David Shaddock and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-04 with Family & Relationships categories.

An experienced couples counselor identifies the unconscious factors that influence the way we feel and behave in intimate relationships-the invisible needs that create and sustain our dysfunctional patterns of relating. Whereas the conventional focus on changing our marital scripts bypasses excavation of their roots in our deepest childhood fears-of abandonment, intrusion, shame-David Shaddock weaves contemporary thinking about the individual into the family systems approach to therapy. Effortlessly, and with gentle authority, he introduces concepts that professional and popular readers alike can adopt to begin to decode symbolic issues and, in turn, generate the understanding that builds empathy between partners.

Many desire an emotionally intimate relationship and yet react to the prospect by pulling away. They do this to obscure their true selves for one of two reasons. They fear rejection if they are to honestly reveal themselves to another. Or, it may be because of a foreboding sense that their identity will be taken away if they truly open up to another. In either case, by pulling away they make themselves seem aloof and guarded and that makes rejection all the more likely. When it happens, their conviction that intimacy is not possible for them is reinforced. For those caught in this web or for those who know people who are, author Jill P. Weber, PhD, a clinical psychologist, explains why a capacity for intimacy is not a fixed quality, but a skill to be developed and refined. This book is the fourth in her Relationship Formula Workbook series. Weber shows how with practice it is possible to foster fulfilling relationships not only with romantic partners, but with family members, friends and coworkers. She draws on years of experience in her practice to layout doable strategies that fundamentally change an individual's ability to find genuine emotional rapport.

In Love, Intimacy and Sex the authors aim to provide a systematic scientific model of love, intimacy and sex -- a necessary beginning for any successful attempt to understand the vastly complex particulars of sex in modern society. They contend that modern sexual views -- influenced by relativism and pop-Freudianism -- have grossly distorted contemporary views of love. Their provocative work is a creative reformulisation of past research with extensive examples of case studies from life and literature which extend our knowledge of bonding, unbonding, and rebonding in relationships. A fascinating reappraisal of love, it is a thought-provoking commentary for both professionals and advanced students in the area of inte
