Mediated Intimacy looks at contemporary sex and relationship advice, exploring how our intimate lives are shaped through different media, from manuals and magazines to television and Twitter. By exploring how intimacy is constructed through different media texts, the authors consider which ideas and practices these changing forms of 'sexpertise' open up, and which they close down. The book reveals the intimate operation of power in mediated advice, how words and images, stories and sound can work to shore up social injustice. It critically engages with the ideas of choice and responsibility in sex self-help, arguing that these can obscure and/or justify oppression, even if they're sometimes experienced as empowering and/or pleasurable. This bold and incisive book provides a radical challenge to the assumptions underlying the sex advice industry, and presents a critical, collaborative and consensual vision for sex advice of the future.

Within the so-called seduction community, the ability to meet and attract women is understood as a skill which heterosexual men can cultivate through practical training and personal development. Though it has been an object of media speculation – and frequent sensationalism – for over a decade, this cultural formation remains poorly understood. In the first book-length study of the industry, Rachel O’Neill takes us into the world of seduction seminars, training events, instructional guidebooks and video tutorials. Pushing past established understandings of ‘pickup artists’ as pathetic, pathological or perverse, she examines what makes seduction so compelling for those drawn to participate in this sphere. Seduction vividly portrays how the twin rationalities of neoliberalism and postfeminism are reorganising contemporary intimate life, as labour-intensive and profit-orientated modes of sociality consume other forms of being and relating. It is essential reading for students and scholars of gender, sexuality, sociology and cultural studies, as well as anyone who wants to understand the seduction industry’s overarching logics and internal workings.

Reality Television Affect And Intimacy written by Misha Kavka and has been published by Palgrave MacMillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-10-31 with Business & Economics categories.

Reality Television, Affect and Intimacy shifts current discussions of media and reality from the informative to the affective, from knowledge to feelings. In reality television, Misha Kavka argues, everyday ‘reality’ is the ground for an experience of immediacy, or televisual intimacy, that is self-evidently mediated and performed. The book explores this paradox by conceptualising the relation between affect and media. For Kavka, affect matters because the feelings generated across the screen are real in a material way. Investigating such concepts as publicity and privacy in reality TV families, performance technologies in Big Brother, arranged marriages in romance reality TV, and gender, race and sexuality in Survivor and Project Runway, she argues that affect is the core reality of a public sphere that is reconfigured by its viewing patterns. Renewing attention to the complexities of affective intimacies, this book offers the rich realities of feeling as a critical alternative to traditional communication models.

This dissertation explores how intimacy is performed in the 21st century, and develops the concept of mediated intimacy. Looking at three sites of performance, I argue that intimacy is an amorphous affect that is given shape, scope, intensity, and meaning through mediating practices. First, I show how sex mediates intimacy through an exploration of sex positivity in the popular HBO series Sex and the City (1998-2004) and Girls (2012-2017). Next, I investigate YouTube videos designed to produce Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), a tingly sensation that some people feel when they hear certain sounds or experience other specific stimuli. By focusing on “personal attention” role play ASMR videos, I show how the performances of ASMRtists and their deft use of technology can facilitate new modes of intimacy, thus opening up conceptions of what may fall under the definition of sex. Lastly, I turn to game studies and an analysis of “safety mechanics” used for mitigating emotional intensity in tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and live action role-playing games (larps). I connect these practices to conversations about sexual consent circulating in popular discourse today, and advocate for shifting the focus of consent guidelines from personal responsibility to mutual response-ability. I conclude by asserting that the study of intimacy is important to critiques of power, and that the concept of mediated intimacy helps to disambiguate sex and intimacy, thus highlighting the political and transformative aspects of sexual encounters.
