'In bringing together seven regional studies by economists from the Global Development Network, Natalia Dinello and Lyn Squire provide an insightful perspective on the relationships between globalization and equity. The topic is important, but too often has been oversimplified and viewed through western lenses. Complexity does not preclude strong conclusions, dubbed the Cairo Consensus here, but its analysis is helped by the mix of expertise and local knowledge embodied in this book.' - Richard Pomfret, University of Adelaide, Australia

In this setting, the complexity of social and economic policy problems of the 21st century requires the recognition of the role of private equity globalization in the selection of investments and in the creation of new business structures. The shifts in corporate ownership, trough waves of mergers and acquisitions, have created new business structures where companies are considered bundles of assets and liabilities to be traded in order to get short-term returns. Indeed, new investment and portfolio management practices have been overwhelmed by the financialisation of wealth and "short-termism" in American and European business. While private equity investors aim to maximize their short-term returns, private equity funds turn to be major transnational employers. The outcomes of the global financial crisis of 2007-2008 made clear the need to redress and redesign business models and re-balance corporate power in order to broaden the dialogue on social responsibility.

This paper examines the impact of globalization on the cost of equity capital. We argue that the cost of equity capital decreases because of globalization for two important reasons. First, the expected return that investors require to invest in equity to compensate them for the risk they bear generally falls. Second, the agency costs which make it harder and more expensive for firms to raise funds become less important. The existing empirical evidence is consistent with the theoretical prediction that globalization decreases the cost of capital, but the documented effects are lower than theory leads us to expect. We discuss various reasons for why this is the case.

Health Equity In A Globalizing Era written by Ronald Labonté and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-14 with Medical categories.

Why do some countries and populations suffer from poverty and ill health, whilst others are more prosperous and healthy? What are the inherently global (trans-border) issues that affect inequities in disease burden and health opportunities for individuals and nations? Traditionally, the focus of global health has been 'international health': the concern for high burdens of disease in generally low-income countries. To answer these questions however, we need to modernise our understanding of globalization as a phenomenon. Health Equity in a Globalizing Era: Past Challenges, Future Prospects examines how globalization processes since the on-set of neoliberalism affect equity in global health outcomes, and emphasises access to important social determinants of health. With a basis in political economy, the book covers key globalization concepts and theory, and presents a thorough background to the field. Case studies, illustrations, and new research all combine to make this title a comprehensive and current discussion of the various pathways that connect globalization to health equity outcomes. It looks at changes in migration, labour markets, trade and investment rules, international development assistance, health systems, infectious and non-communicable disease risks, environmental health, and gendered aspects of globalization's health dialectic. In addition, it argues for a reform of the global governance structure, the significant role of human rights, and the importance of a strong civil society in achieving greater social justice in health. Ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate students in global health programs, global health scholars and practitioners in government policy and health/development NGOs, Health Equity in a Globalizing Era: Past Challenges, Future Prospects is a significant contribution to our new understanding of globalization and global public health.

Global Problems written by Scott Sernau and has been published by Waveland Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-18 with Social Science categories.

Scott Sernau’s clear writing and vivid examples help readers to understand their role as global citizens. Part one begins with the challenges of inequality in life chances, wages and work, and gender and education; inequality lies at the heart of many global problems. Part two focuses on conflict and violence—from crime to politics, terrorism to war—with an emphasis on connections of violence to social justice and human rights. Part three looks at sustainability and the problems of urbanization, crowding, and environmental destruction. Each chapter begins with a “Global Encounters” vignette that provides examples of college students encountering striking situations and being asked to think about broader implications. Though people across the globe lead seemingly very different lives, the author emphasizes interconnectedness, with discussions of the local–global connection. Chapters explore social problems by considering key theories, both classical and contemporary, and by providing enough history to understand the background of contemporary issues. The book’s approach is both multinational and multidisciplinary. Chapters conclude with positive possibilities for global change. While problems are substantial, many people are working to make a difference, and this book offers an invitation to participate. In addition to “Key Ideas” and “For Review and Discussion,” every chapter concludes with “Making Connections” that offers reliable websites for more information and “Making a Difference,” which provides options for involvement. These sections can form the basis for assignments, for further study, or for class or group projects.

The advent of the single currency within the European Union provides a natural experiment to measure how the cost of equity changes as globalization takes place. This is because the launch of the single currency has led to the elimination of currency-related restrictions on the composition of institutional investors' portfolios and, hence, to increased risk sharing among EU investors. We focus not only on the impact of globalization on the level of the cost of equity, but also on the cross-country and cross-sectoral dispersion in the cost of capital. Over the 1990s it is shown that the cost of equity within EU sectors falls by between 0.5 and 3 percentage points. There is strong evidence of convergence in the cost of equity across different countries in the same sector. However, convergence across different sectors is small. An implication for portfolio management is that country effects are becoming smaller and sector effects larger.
