Organizations and U.S. workers across the life course indicate increased interest in flexible work arrangements. More organizations have flexibility on the books, but rates of utilization remain low, and both workers and organizations note operational challenges and concerns. Noticing the commonality of these experiences across organizational settings and the need for more in-depth examination of workplace structure and culture not limited to circumstances immediately surrounding flexibility, Lisa Fisher set out to identify specific elements of the structure and culture of work that impeded flexibility in an organization that had a history of struggle with it. Using interviews and non-participant observation to conduct a qualitative case study, she found that the struggle, happening on the ground within the daily processes of work, was not the result of unsupportive management or overly-cautious employees. Instead, she found evidence of something much more powerful and all-encompassing: a system of silence surrounding flexibility. Fisher begins the book with a thoughtful account of the history and current state of flexibility in the U.S. within a framework that considers changing demographics, organizational perspectives, neoliberalism, globalization and lingering problems with how we think about flexibility. She then provides an in-depth analysis of the structure and culture of work at the organization studied, which culminates in a model specifying the workings of the system of silence as a phenomenon nested within the work environment and larger cultural ideas about work and workers. Fisher shows how things assumed to be unrelated to flexibility can still have bearing on the ways that an organization understands and approaches it. She thereby develops a rich, informative account of struggle and resilience, change and adaptation, confusion and sense-making, and obstacles and pathways, an account which suggests important theoretical implications and provides practical tips for organizations that are serious about flexibility.

Flexible Work Solutions explores how flexible work arrangements can harmonize professional ambitions with family life, benefiting both employees and employers. It argues that these arrangements are not mere perks but a fundamental part of a sustainable work-life ecosystem. The book uses HR studies and productivity data to demonstrate the tangible benefits of policies like flexible hours and telecommuting. One intriguing insight is how reduced stress levels, stemming from better work-life balance, can lead to increased employee productivity. Another is the measurable impact of flexible policies on employee engagement and retention. The book challenges traditional 9-to-5 norms, presenting a data-driven case for a more human-centered approach. It begins by defining key concepts such as telecommuting and compressed workweeks. The book then systematically examines the impact of flexible work on family dynamics, employee productivity, and organizational success. It also addresses potential pitfalls and provides strategies for effective implementation. Ultimately, Flexible Work Solutions provides actionable steps for organizations to enhance their flexible work programs, making it a valuable resource for HR professionals, managers, and business leaders seeking to improve employee well-being and organizational performance.

Purpose -Organizations have been employing flexibility in the workplace to maintain employee motivation and performance. Engagement is of importance in relation to flexibility in the workplace since the aim of flexible work options/arrangements is to achieve a balance between work obligations and private obligations through work employees can stay and become engaged in their work. This paper contributes to research on employee engagement and the role of flexibility in the workplace by exploring an active state of employees, namely employee engagement, rather than passive work states such as commitment or organizational support Methodology - A survey was completed by 504 employees working in 11 different information technology organizations in Bengaluru, India. A majority of the respondents were from the 26-30 years age group and 87.90% of them were male. The survey included measures of flexible working arrangements and employee engagement along with control variables (demographic).Data were obtained from 504 participants (443 males, 87.90%); 61 females, 12.1%. Most participants were aged between 26-30 years (233 participants). Most participants had worked in their current organization for less than 2 years (219 participants) while most of them had a total work experience of 2 - 5 years (259 participants). Findings - All respondents had availed of at least one type of flexible work arrangements in their current organization. 81.74% of respondents had availed of flexible working hours, 23.21% had availed of flexi-shift arrangements, 39.29% of them had availed of work-from-home/satellite office/telecommuting options, 2.2% had availed of part-time employment, 2.77% had availed of job sharing option, 15.48% had availed of extended leave option and 14.88% had availed of parenthood leave. A weak positive linear correlation of 0.289 between Flexible Work Options (FWO) and Employee Engagement (EE) existed. Relevance / Conclusions - This study addresses the concerns about lack of academic research on flexible work options/arrangements and employee engagement within information technology organizations in the Indian context. The study shows a positive relationship between flexible work arrangements offered by organizations and employee engagement. It is also possible that respondents who chose not to use FWA's to ease their work-life interface problems might have ascertained that this non-use of FWA increases the perceived security of their jobs. The study clearly shows that offering flexible options to employees has potential benefits. Although this study accounted for younger employees and represents only their perceptions, organizations should be aware that flexible work arrangement options are not only important for parents with young children but also for employees who are senior in the organization who can potentially avail of flexible options.
