As the Internet has become a common household utility, more and more students are coming to school with Internet experience. How do students' and teachers' roles, and schools as institutions, change when these Internet-Age kids enter classrooms that are fully equipped with networked computers? This book offers a unique analysis of the issues and challenges teachers face as their classrooms become fully connected to the Internet.Anne Hird spent six months observing a class in a school with fully connected classrooms. She presents a vivid and insightful account–often reported through the students' own words--of how young teens use computers in and out of school; how they perceive the world shaped by the Internet; and how these factors shape their expectations for classroom learning. She observes and reflects on the paradox which confronts teachers in this environment. They are expected to guide students in learning with a cognitive tool that was not part of the teachers' experience as students, while students' familiarity with the Internet calls into question the authority of the teacher on which the traditional teacher-student relationship is based. She offers a strategy for professional development which recognizes and builds on this inevitable shift in the teacher-student relationship. This is an absorbing, thought-provoking and practical book for all educators--individual teachers and administrators alike–concerned about the integration of computer technology into elementary and secondary school classrooms.

In a world where there is still a digital divide, and where many second-language learners are digital natives, the internet has unquestionably come to provide significant impact on the way that we communicate, teach, learn, and live. The major pedagogical promise has come with the shift away from the static provision of information to that of dynamic information sharing and user-generated content. The internet has become much more than a source of authentic materials and supplemental resources for the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL); it now provides a means for students to engage in functional communicative experiences, write and communicate with a wider audience, and showcase their work. All kinds of topics and resources are available, but as most are unsuitable for language learning, they need to be selected wisely. Guidance needs to be effective, and those with little experience in using digital tools and websites for learning need to be kept from becoming disengaged. This is where the teacher and this book perform a critical role. In this book, the focus is on the use of various tools and techniques that help students to express themselves and to learn with technology, particularly those which rely on the internet to function, those that have been around since the dawn of the internet, and those that have evolved with the growth of the internet. Specifically covered is: world-wide-web utilization for the fostering and development of multiple literacies through socio-constructivist learning via the WebQuest model, constructing visually-based asynchronous digital conversations with VoiceThread, and developing user-generated content with blogs and wikis. The book is intended to be read in whole or in part by teachers, students, parents, and any other stakeholders who may be interested in the topics.

Why has the study of effective standards for online education grown steadily, beyond the usual confines of departments and colleges of education, in contrast to the level of interest in the higher education classroom? The process for online and blended course creation and improvement at the postsecondary level has engaged individuals and institutions in ways seldom experienced in face-to-face education. This work increasingly involves teams of individuals who need to share and collaborate in order to succeed. And the successful course, or even the well designed learning object, is itself an artifact that begs to be shared, analyzed and improved. This sharing begins locally, but spreads quickly to become regional, national, and even international. The collaborations that result from this phenomenon and the courses that are thereby strengthened, term by term, hold promise for the continual improvement of online education, year-by-year and version-by-version. This volume of Internet Learning is predicated upon work by individuals from the Quality Matters Program-an internationally recognized leader in quality assurance for online education, and by individuals who have conducted research studies based upon the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric and course review process. It captures a small, but significant, sample of the kind of detailed analysis of online education toward which engagement with QM typically leads. Studies such as these are essential toward advancing quality in online teaching and learning, and will undoubtedly impact classroom-based education as well.
