הספר המוגש בזאת בא למלא חסר משווע במידע הכתוב על הקהילה היהודית הגדולה ביותר בעולם ועל יחסה לישראל; קיימים אמנם פרסומים המתארים את ההיסטוריה של הציונות בארצות הברית, א האופי הרעיוני של הציונות הוזנח בהם. לפני שנים אחדות התקיים בקמפוסים של אוניברסיטת בן גוריון בנגב בבאר שבע ובקריית שדה בוקר כנס בינלאומי שמטרתו היתה למלא חסר זה. הכנס הצטיין ברמתו וזכה לתמיכת האקדמיה הלאומית הישראלית למדעים. הוא גם בלט בכך שהתמקד והעמיק בנושא מרכזי אחד: האידיאלים והדימויים של יהודי צפון-אמריקה ביחס לישראל. באי הכנס חתרו לדיון נוקב ורב צדדי שיאיא נכוחה את האידיאולוגיה הציונית-אמריקנית. בהקשר זה זכו להארה הולמת גם הערכים הדמוקרטיים - ליברליים המושרשים ביהדות אמריקה. עולם רעיוני זה, שבשל סיבות היסטוריות כמעט שאינו מוכר בישראל, נמצא במרכזו של הספר. ספר זה, המסכם את הכנס, הוא פרי של בחירה ועריכה קפדניות. הוא נועד לעניין לא רק חוקרים וסטודנטים אלא גם את כלל הציבור המשכיל בישראל, ובעצם כל ישראלי שזהותו היהודית והזיקה לעם היהודי הן בעלות משמעות עבורו. יוזם הכנס ועורך הקובץ, פרופסור אלון גל, השתלם בארצות הברית באוניברסיטאות הידועות בהתמחותן בלימודים אתניים וביהדות אמריקה.
