Excerpt from Young Japan: The Story of the Japanese People Especially of Their Educational Development This book, while complete in itself, is also designed as a companion of "Japan To-Day." The other work was intended to be a random portfolio of views, showing contemporary life in Japan under every ordinary condition, and from every attainable angle. The present volume attempts to tell the unified story of the nation in the simplest possible manner. Occasionally, in order to make this book complete, it was necessary to recall matters contained in the other, especially in the opening pages. The plan of my undertaking is twofold: to tell the bare outline story of the people of Japan, and to give a somewhat more detailed account of their remarkable educational development. The first part of each of the three "books" traces the evolution of the nation, while the remainder tries to show the groundwork from which that process has proceeded. Christianity And Imperialism In Modern Japan written by Emily Anderson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-23 with History categories.

Christianity and Imperialism in Modern Japan explores how Japanese Protestants engaged with the unsettling changes that resulted from Japan's emergence as a world power in the early 20th century. Through this analysis, the book offers a new perspective on the intersection of religion and imperialism in modern Japan. Emily Anderson reassesses religion as a critical site of negotiation between the state and its subjects as part of Japan's emergence as a modern nation-state and colonial empire. The book shows how religion, including its adherents and the state's attempts to determine acceptable belief, is a necessary subject of study for a nuanced understanding of modern Japanese history.

Political Systems Of East Asia written by Louis D. Hayes and has been published by M.E. Sharpe this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-27 with Political Science categories.

Louis D. Hayes provides an innovative, interdisciplinary introduction to East Asian politics. It uses a thematic approach to trace the political-historical development of China, Korea, and Japan and analyze the social, cultural, political, and economic features of each country. The book describes the ways in which a shared Confucian tradition and particular historical experiences of imperialism and war have affected each country's internal dynamics, responses to the outside world, and distinctive political developmental trajectory, especially since World War II. While the book is structured to facilitate comparisons, it avoids the limitations of most comparative politics texts by focusing less on Western conceptions of state and governance and more on East Asian perspectives of the universe and how it operates. Even the considerations of contemporary policy issues in each country are cast in a wider framework that gives the discussion enduring value.

Taste Of War written by Lizzie Collingham and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-29 with History categories.

A New York Times Notable Book of 2012 Food, and in particular the lack of it, was central to the experience of World War II. In this richly detailed and engaging history, Lizzie Collingham establishes how control of food and its production is crucial to total war. How were the imperial ambitions of Germany and Japan - ambitions which sowed the seeds of war - informed by a desire for self-sufficiency in food production? How was the outcome of the war affected by the decisions that the Allies and the Axis took over how to feed their troops? And how did the distinctive ideologies of the different combatant countries determine their attitudes towards those they had to feed? Tracing the interaction between food and strategy, on both the military and home fronts, this gripping, original account demonstrates how the issue of access to food was a driving force within Nazi policy and contributed to the decision to murder hundreds of thousands of 'useless eaters' in Europe. Focusing on both the winners and losers in the battle for food, The Taste of War brings to light the striking fact that war-related hunger and famine was not only caused by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, but was also the result of Allied mismanagement and neglect, particularly in India, Africa and China. American dominance both during and after the war was not only a result of the United States' immense industrial production but also of its abundance of food. This book traces the establishment of a global pattern of food production and distribution and shows how the war subsequently promoted the pervasive influence of American food habits and tastes in the post-war world. A work of great scope, The Taste of War connects the broad sweep of history to its intimate impact upon the lives of individuals.

Japan S Occupation Of Java In The Second World War written by Ethan Mark and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-12 with History categories.

**Shortlisted for the ICAS (International Convention of Asia Scholars) Book Prize in the Humanities 2019** Japan's Occupation of Java in the Second World War draws upon written and oral Japanese, Indonesian, Dutch and English-language sources to narrate the Japanese occupation of Java as a transnational intersection between two complex Asian societies, placing this narrative in a larger wartime context of domestic, regional, and global crisis. Japan's occupation of Java is here revealed in a radically new and nuanced light, as an ambiguous encounter revolutionary in the degree of mutual interests that drew the two sides together, fascinating and tragic in its evolution, and profound in the legacies left behind. Mark structures his study around a diverse group of Japanese and Indonesians captivated by the wartime vision of a 'Greater Asia.' The book is not only the first transnational study of Japan's wartime occupation of Java, but the first to focus on the Second World War experience in transnational terms 'on the ground' anywhere in Asia. Breaking new ground interpretatively, thematically and narratively, Mark's monumental study is of vital significance for students and scholars of modern Asian and global history. This book is published in partnership with Columbia University's Weatherhead East Asian Institute (http://weai.columbia.edu/japans-occupation-of-java/).
