Woven Tapestry is an in-depth practical guide to the technique of this unique art form, and to finding creative expression within it. Progressive exercises based on the authors' combined 50 years' experience are used to explain technique from making a first sample through to finished pieces. These are illustrated by over 400 specially woven samples and diagrams. The underlying principles are outlined and applied in a contemporary and creative way. Full-page images illustrate the qualities of line, colour, pattern and texture unique to woven tapestry, and the rich and exciting range of yarns available. Exercises in making and interpreting designs guide the developing weaver towards making individually creative work. Woven Tapestry offers the reader the technical skills and understanding needed to make expressive and beautiful work of their own. By working with several weft threads simultaneously, tapestry weaving becomes highly nuanced and is capable of complex imagery. Exercises in design show how to make use of the unique qualities that woven tapestry has to offer. The initial techniques are fundamentally simple and are clearly explained using only basic equipment and readily available yarns. The reader is encouraged to take time in learning, and to look closely whilst working. The continuous slow under over rhythm of weft passing through warp can promote a mental space in which to think and feel more deeply, and ultimately to create. Right from the first exercise there are creative choices to be made. By progressing to more advanced techniques, and working with many types and combinations of yarns, the expressive freedom available to the developing weaver soon becomes endless.

Their vivid colours and attractive designs, often combined with supreme workmanship, make these Oriental tapestry-woven rugs a fascinating study. In this book, the first to be devoted entirely to kilims, the author has chosen to study kilims in general, examining as many examples as possible, and grouping them typologically and geographically. The result constitutes the first comprehensive review of an art form whose importance and outstanding artistic merit has hitherto gone unrecognized. The functions of kilims are varied, but always practical--coverings for furniture, rugs, prayer mats, door-hangings--thus reflecting a mentality which conceives of beauty not in the abstract, but within the context of everyday life. The kilims illustrated demonstrate an astonishing variety of design, pattern and technique; their structure is explained clearly, with accompanying diagrams; and their geographical and social background is outlined and illustrated. Kilims will interest all those intrigued by cultures outside their own, as well as collectors of Islamic art, architects, interior designers, students of primitive and tribal art, and the growing number of carpet-makers. -- Inside jacket flap.

From the Middle Ages, tapestries with figurative or other ornament were used by royalty and aristocrats to furnish their palaces and houses. While often observed as two dimensional art, they are three dimensional structures requiring specialist skill to maintain and conserve them. Since the vast majority of tapestries are on open display in historic interiors they pose particular conservation and interpretation challenges.00This publication aims to help conservators carry out assessments in order to arrive at appropriate options for treatment by focussing on: the techniques of tapestry manufacture; agents of deterioration, and current practice of methods of cleaning, methods of support and repair.
