Now in its sixteenth annual edition, the World Development Report 1993 is an essential reference on the world economy and the state of social and economic development. Like earlier editions, the 1993 Report incorporates research from all over the world, analyzing the conditions that surround the growth process and offering insights on appropriate policy measures for the future. Drawing on the latest Bank research, this edition examines national health policies worldwide and measures their success in improving health and reducing costs, describing approaches governments can take to improve the health of the poor. For the first time including available data for selected countries of the former Soviet Union and the Eastern and Central European economies, the World Development Indicators contain the most comprehensive and up-to-date data on health and economic development in more than 185 countries. Two appendices assess the global burden of disease and supplementary statistics concerned with financing and delivering health services. A timely survey and synthesis of contemporary economic issues worldwide, the World Development Report 1993 is invaluable to anyone interested in or concerned with economic development, international economics, and international politics.

Since its headline-making debut, the Human Development Report has become an essential resource for development specialists, economists, and political scientists around the world. While previous Human Development Reports focused on investment in people, the 1993 Report not only updates the findings of the earlier volumes, but shifts the focus towards the "other" side of human development--mobilizing and utilizing human potential. The Report surveys the instruments for enhancing and encouraging participatory patterns of development, including privatization and participatory market structures, vertical and horizontal decentralization of government functions, devolution of government powers, enterprise decentralization, involvement of NGOs and other grass-roots organizations, and empowerment of people. It probes the vital connections between employment and development, and offers a global framework for employment that takes into account the growing pressure for international migration. In addition, it examines links between human development and international markets for ucts, capital, and labor, and presents updated human development indicators for more than 160 countries.

This sixth edition of the widely-respected Human Development Report updates the unique Human Development Indicators comparing human development in most countries of the world, and the data tables on all aspects of human development. This edition includes a special section that examines issues of gender, analyzing global trends in closing and widening gender gaps in different regions and countries. It presents new indicators of gender equality in order to rank countries on a global scale, while it highlights policies that have ensured equal access to opportunities for men and women. The issue also proposes new methodologies to measure and value unpaid contributions made by men and women to human development through household and community activities, and it identifies a new action agenda for promoting gender equality in the decades ahead.

Privatizing Health Services In Africa written by Meredeth Turshen and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Business & Economics categories.
Privatizing Health Services in Africa analyzes the disappearance of public health in the form of state services in Africa, and the growth of a private market in health care that will serve primarily an urban elite. Meredeth Turshen considers the implications of introducing private insurance in countries with growing unemployment, a shrinking formal job sector, and a lack of social security programs or other safety nets. She debates the pros and cons of shifting the delivery of health services to the nongovernmental sector in the context of new concepts of the role of the state. Many of the schemes to privatize the purchase and sale of pharmaceuticals reverse decades of United Nations work challenging the power of the multinational drug industry. Turshen weighs these policy changes in light of the World Bank's eclipse of the World Health Organization as the premier UN health policy agency. Until now, no book has disputed the World Bank's plans to privatize health care in Africa. This is the first book-length analysis of policy changes in light of monetarism and globalization. Throughout the book, Turshen examines the implications of privatization for gender equity. She also provides a case study of Zimbabwe and comparative material from Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. Her study makes a contribution to current debates on the impact of structural adjustment policies on health and the design of health services in the Third World.
