Henrietta Muir Edwards's 'Legal Status of Canadian Women' is an insightful examination of the legal rights and limitations faced by women in Canada during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Edwards dissects the various discriminatory laws and practices that marginalized women in both public and private spheres, offering a detailed analysis of the legal landscape that shaped Canadian society at the time. Through meticulous research and a compelling writing style, she sheds light on the struggles and triumphs of Canadian women seeking equality under the law. As a prominent suffragist and women's rights activist, Henrietta Muir Edwards was a firsthand witness to the injustices faced by women in Canada. Her personal experiences and tireless advocacy for gender equality undoubtedly inspired her to delve into the intricacies of Canadian legal frameworks in relation to women's rights. Thoroughly revised and updated, this fourth edition, of Rethinking Canada: The Promise of Women's History is part of the continuing teminist effort to discover what it means to be women and Canadians. Rethinking Canada examines key developments in Canadian history -- from the founding of New, France to the present -- while at the same time highlighting the distinctive texture of women's experiences and identities. This decidedly non-traditional reconstruction of Canadian history focuses on the lives, struggles, and contributions of women, enlarging and diversifying the picture of the past found in conventional historical accounts. Of the 26 readings in this volume, 16 are new. Subjects range from the impact of colonialism on gender relations in Aboriginal societies; to the immigration of Japanese 'picture brides' in early twentieth-century British Columbia; to transnational political alliances formed by Canadian and Mexican women in response to NAFTA. Other topics include sexuality, workforce trends, gender and public policy, and much more. The selections aim, above all, to bring diverse and marginalized groups of women out of the historical shadows. The voices of First Nations women, women of colour, and immigrant women, for example, resound clearly in this volume. An informative introduction to each reading situates the article in its specific historical and historiographical context, and each introduction concludes with questions designed to stimulate analysis and discussion of the text. By presenting current scholarship in the context of three decades of research into Canadian women's history, Rethinking Canada, Fourth Edition, offers new and fascinating perspectives on women and on Canada. Women everywhere share one experience: they are members of a class whose separate culture results in special, and often unequal, treatment. But the unique historical, geographical and cultural situa- tion of women in Canada determines the particular nature of their experience in ways which have been little known or understood by historians, sociologists or women themselves. This anthology of articles by and about Canadian women explores some of these experi- ences, both past and present. The suffrage movement created in women the beginnings of a new awareness, but it was the cataclysmic events of the next few decades which led to the recent rebirth of feminism in many Western countries. The Canadian version assumed its own particular shape. A disparate array of women's organizations were hastily formed and often as hastily disbanded. The wave of new consciousness brought with it such phenomena as the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, day-care centres, women's studies courses, and the promise of women bishops, political party leaders and union heads. But how much has all this activity really affected women in their working, and private lives? How does the Prairie farm wife, the university professor, the factory worker, the artist, the immigrant woman, experience the new climate of opinion and opportunity? Have their lives changed substantially since the days when the suffrag- ist Nellie McClung wrote that "life conspires to keep a woman tangled in trifles"? The eighteen contributors to Women in the Canadian Mosaic pre- sent very personal answers to these questions. Their various ap- proaches are always lively and illuminating and reflect something of the richness and multiplicity of the Canadian woman's experience.
