Governments have introduced policies to widen the participation of disadvantaged students in higher education. Widening participation policies are also introduced to ensure that higher education contributes to social and economic outcomes. This book includes important insights from 23 leading scholars across 11 countries on a wide range of topics that focus on government policies, institutional structures and the social and economic impacts of widening participation. While widening participation policies and outcomes in developed countries are more widely documented, the policies, achievements, and challenges in other countries such as Brazil, China, Indonesia, South Africa and Palestine are not so widely disseminated. Therefore, the 'untold stories' of policies and outcomes of widening participation are a key part of this book. The chapters are organised according to three overarching themes, which include national and transnational studies of the history of widening participation and current policies; inclusive learning and academic outcomes; and socioeconomic structures, concepts and theories. - Engages prominent academics, earlier career researchers, and research students - Provides a wide range of topics related to widening participation - Explores social and economic impact of widening student participation - Presents untold stories of widening participation in developing countries experiencing growth in youth population

This is a review of the road travelled so far and the way ahead for widening participation in English higher education. Its broad range of contributors - from higher education institutions, and from schools, further education, funding and planning agencies and the NHS - argue the case for more diverse learner-centred provision rather than further stratification of the sector. The first chapters offer experiences and insights from managers working in universities and colleges. Despite the wide variation in the type of institution that they serve, all recognise the need to evaluate higher education providers on the basis of fitness for purpose. Each expresses strong reservations about the rhetoric of 'fair access'. There follow chapters on models and markets for higher education, and analyses of social structures, young people's life chances and appraisals of initiatives that set out to help learners from disadvantaged communities.

Issues of access, social exclusion and widening participation dominate educational policy agendas and are a shared global challenge. Participation in higher education and adult lifelong learning activities can be a life-changing experience that opens up new opportunities. However, access remains unequal. People from lower socio-economic backgrounds, those living in the most deprived areas and people from minority ethnic groups are underrepresented. In this book, we focus on how we can move the field of widening participation forward, paying specific attention to the theories and methods we can use to better understand and tackle the problem of underrepresented groups in post-compulsory education, and how individuals and institutions can be supported. We argue that in order to make sense of these issues, it is important to engage in both the findings of widening participation research and the theoretical foundations which underpin them. This way, alternative perspectives on the widening participation agenda and emerging research and policy can be explored from alternative perspectives. This book was originally published as a special issue of Studies in Continuing Education.

From an analysis of the motives for expansion and the reasons why students enroll--or fail to enroll--through to a critical analysis of existing and innovative schemes, the author highlights good practice and explains ways to develop a strategic approach to widening participation.
