It is an old racist adage that Africans have just come down from the trees. So why are young Europeans and Americans climbing back up them? Primitivism has always had a place in flaming the West's conception of Africa, whether in the form of the Noble Savage' or crazed cults such as the Mau Mau. If not everyone is quite ready to live in a tree house, the primitivism viewpoint has still made major inroads into modern society. NGO volunteers are central to the way the world relates to Africa these days. Why are these educated and motivated young people from the West predisposed to defining Africans ethnically? Privileging the Primitive argues that the popularity of modern primitivism in the West is highly relevant to the current recasting of African ethnicity. Some scholars argue that ethnicity is a relapse into primordialism, while others hold it be a more modern, fluid entity. The notion that ethnicity can be a moral code is growing. Historians argue over whether ethnicity is purely a product of African culture, a political category invented by colonial administrators, or a hybrid that mixes the two. Aidan Campbell locates ethnicity's derivation in our changing perceptions of Western society and, in particular, in the rehabilitation of the West's jaded political institutions.

In recent years the concept of 'the primitive' has been the subject of strong criticism; it has been examined, unpacked, and shown to signify little more than a construction or projection necessary for establishing the modernity of the West. The term 'primitive' continues, however, to appear in contemporary critical and cultural discourse, begging the question: Why does primitivism keep reappearing even after it has been uncovered as a modern myth? In The Neo-primitivist Turn, Victor Li argues that this contentious term was never completely banished and that it has in fact reappeared under new theoretical guises. An idealized conception of 'the primitive,' he contends, has come to function as the ultimate sign of alterity. Li focuses on the works of theorists like Jean Baudrillard, Jean-François Lyotard, Marianna Torgovnick, Marshall Sahlins, and Jürgen Habermas in order to demonstrate that primitivism continues to be a powerful presence even in those works normally regarded as critical of the concept. Providing close readings of the ways in which the premodern or primitive is strategically deployed in contemporary critical writings, Li's interdisciplinary study is a timely and forceful intervention into current debates on the politics and ethics of otherness, the problems of cultural relativism, and the vicissitudes of modernity.

The academic study of Indigenous Religions developed historically from missiological and anthropological sources. Evaluating this assumption in the light of case studies drawn from Zimbabwe, Alaska and shamanic traditions, and in view of debates over 'primitivism', this work mounts a defence for the use of the category 'Indigenous Religions'.

Anti Primitivism And The Decline Of The West The Primitive And The Supernatural written by C. Stanley Urban and has been published by Edwin Mellen Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Religion categories.

This text states that the West obliterated primitive civilizations everywhere in the names of Christianity and progress, and that that was an act of cultural ignorance. It states further that they were not exterminated - or better, absorbed - in the name of democracy, because the latter was for the white man only and was thought too exotic for the primitive to grasp, and that from a scholarly point of view, if the idea of progress has failed, it will eventually cause the failure of democracy. The author declares that this idea has to be dealt with on at least three levels, i.e., the Third World where there are almost no prospects; Russia and Eastern Europe where success with a free market economy is dubious; and, finally, at home where, under democracy and diverse ethnic and religious groups, society seems unable to solve basic and vital issues.

Beginning with early 20th-century figures--among them Carl Jung, Isak Dinesen, and Georgia O'Keeffe--who found in "the primitive" a medium for soul-searching and personal change, Torgovnivk probes how the return to the primitive has signaled a quest to transcend the limitations of the body in a variety of contemporary practices, from genital piercing to New Age rites to the mythopoetic men's movement.
