Choice Outstanding Title, September 2020 This book fills a gap in the middle ground between quantum mechanics of a single electron to the concept of a quantum field. In doing so, the book is divided into two parts; the first provides the necessary background to quantum theory extending from Planck’s formulation of black body radiation to Schrodinger’s equation; and the second part explores Dirac’s relativistic electron to quantum fields, finishing with an description of Feynman diagrams and their meaning. Much more than a popular account, yet not too heavy so as to be inaccessible, this book assumes no prior knowledge of quantum physics or field theory and provides the necessary foundations for readers to then progress to more advanced texts on quantum field theory. It will be of interest to undergraduate students in physics and mathematics, in addition to an interested, general audience. Features: Provides an extensive yet accessible background to the concepts Contains numerous, illustrative diagrams Presents in-depth explanations of difficult subjects

Particles Fields And Forces written by Wouter Schmitz and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-23 with Science categories.

How can fundamental particles exist as waves in the vacuum? How can such waves have particle properties such as inertia? What is behind the notion of “virtual” particles? Why and how do particles exert forces on one another? Not least: What are forces anyway? These are some of the central questions that have intriguing answers in Quantum Field Theory and the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Unfortunately, these theories are highly mathematical, so that most people - even many scientists - are not able to fully grasp their meaning. This book unravels these theories in a conceptual manner, using more than 180 figures and extensive explanations and will provide the nonspecialist with great insights that are not to be found in the popular science literature.

Wave Particle Gyroresonance Interactions In The Earth S Outer Ionosphere written by Timothy Francis Bell and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1964 with categories.

An investigation is presented of certain aspects of those gyroresonance interactions which take place between very low frequency VLF electromagnetic waves and charged particle fluxes in the earth's outer ionosphere. These interactions, in which significant amounts of energy can be exchanged between the particle's kinetic energy form and the wave electromagnetic-energy form, are thought to be of importance with respect to the dynamical properties of the earths' outer ionosphere. Specifically two problems are considered. The first problem involves the stability of the outer ionosphere plasma to whistler-mode waves under conditions in which high energy electron fluxes permeate this plasma. The second problem involves the feasibility of the creation or depletion of an artificial radiation belt utilizing the geocyclotron gyroresonance interaction in order to transfer energy between man-made waves and relativistic electrons trapped in the outer ionosphere by the earths' magnetic field near the magnetic equatorial plane.

Waves Particles And Storms In Geospace written by Georgios Balasis and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-03 with Science categories.

Geospace features highly dynamic populations of charged particles with a wide range of energies from thermal to ultra-relativistic. Influenced by magnetic and electric fields in the terrestrial magnetosphere driven by solar wind forcing, changes in the numbers and energies of these particles lead to a variety of space weather phenomena, some of which are detrimental to space infrastructure. This book presents an overview of the latest discoveries and current scientific understanding of the coupling of electromagnetic waves and charged particles during magnetic storms, and explains the observed dynamics of these particle populations. The book furthermore includes investigations relevant to understanding and forecasting this space environment and the adverse impacts of space weather. High-energy electrons and ions in the Van Allen radiation belts and the ring current are of particular interest and importance with regard to the operation of space-based technological infrastructure upon which 21st century civilisation increasingly relies. This book presents the latest research on the sources, transport, acceleration and loss of these energetic particle populations, as well as their coupling during geospace magnetic storms.

Acoustic And Elastic Wave Fields In Geophysics written by Alexander A. Kaufman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Acoustic surface waves categories.

This monograph is the last volume in the series 'Acoustic and Elastic Wave Fields in Geophysics'. The previous two volumes published by Elsevier (2000, 2002) dealt mostly with wave propagation in liquid media. The third volume is dedicated to propagation of plane, spherical and cylindrical elastic waves in different media including isotropic and transversely isotropic solids, liquid-solid models, and media with cylindrical inclusions (boreholes). * Prevalence of physical reasoning on formal mathematical derivations * Readers do not need to have a strong background in mathematics and mathematical physics * Detailed analysis of wave phenomena in various types of elastic and liquid-elastic media.
