Race And Retail written by Mia Bay and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Race has long shaped shopping experiences for many Americans. Retail exchanges and establishments have made headlines as flashpoints for conflict not only between blacks and whites, but also between whites, Mexicans, Asian Americans, and a wide variety of other ethnic groups, who have at times found themselves unwelcome at white-owned businesses. Race and Retail documents the extent to which retail establishments, both past and present, have often catered to specific ethnic and racial groups. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the original essays collected here explore selling and buying practices of nonwhite populations around the world and the barriers that shape these habits, such as racial discrimination, food deserts, and gentrification. The contributors highlight more contemporary issues by raising questions about how race informs business owners’ ideas about consumer demand, resulting in substandard quality and higher prices for minorities than in predominantly white neighborhoods. In a wide-ranging exploration of the subject, they also address revitalization and gentrification in South Korean and Latino neighborhoods in California, Arab and Turkish coffeehouses and hookah lounges in South Paterson, New Jersey, and tourist capoeira consumption in Brazil. Race and Retail illuminates the complex play of forces at work in racialized retail markets and the everyday impact of those forces on minority consumers. The essays demonstrate how past practice remains in force in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

Slavery Religion And Race In Antebellum Missouri written by Kevin D. Butler and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-09 with History categories.

Antebellum Missouri’s location at the intersection of North, South, and West makes it a location that allows one to examine regionalism in the United States in one location since Missouri contained characteristics of each region. Missouri also provides a view of how religion functioned for people in the antebellum United States. The institution of slavery transformed evangelical Christianity in the South from an influence with potential to erode slavery into an institution that was a bulwark for slavery. For African Americans, religion constituted part of their cultural resistance against the dehumanization of slavery. Through conjure, their traditional religion, they sought control over their own lives and practical tools to aid them with everyday issues. Christianity also provided control over their destiny and a belief system, that in their hands, affirmed the sinfulness of slavery and confirmed that it was their right and their destiny to be free.

Excerpt from Voodoo Tales as Told Among the Negroes of the Southwest: Collected From Original Sources As leaves are seldom gathered till they change colour and begin to fall, nor made into bouquets and wreaths till brilliant colours begin to show themselves in their dying beauties; so, all the world over, folk-lore stories are but little noticed by the cultured world until they begin to assume romantic lines of association, nor are they gathered till they have fallen, so to speak, from the lofty trees of religion, and lie on the ground, or are driven about by the playful wind, as mere legends or nursery tales. It is in this state when "prettiest" - but unfortunately driest - that the relics of tradition are most admired by children or the general reader; and there are indeed too many folk-lorists who care to go no further. This very remarkable collection by Miss Mary A. Owen takes us more deeply than those which are made on the Grimm principle of "pleasing tales for the nursery" - back to the fresh green and growing leaves. It is indeed entertaining and amusing, but nothing has in it been sacrificed to the latter element, nor are the narrators of the tales in it made of more real importance than the subject. This subject is as curious as it is entirely novel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Weird World Of Eerie Publications written by Mike Howlett and has been published by Feral House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-30 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

Eerie Publications' horror magazines brought blood and bad taste to America's newsstands from 1965 through 1975. Ultra-gory covers and bottom-of-the-barrel production values lent an air of danger to every issue, daring you to look at (and purchase) them. The Weird of World of Eerie Publications introduces the reader to Myron Fass, the gun-toting megalomaniac publisher who, with tyranny and glee, made a career of fishing pocketbook change from young readers with the most insidious sort of exploitation. You'll also meet Carl Burgos, who, as editor of Eerie Publications, ground his axe against the entire comics industry. Slumming comic art greats and unknown hacks were both employed by Eerie to plagiarize the more inspired work of pre-Code comic art of the 1950s. Somehow these lowbrow abominations influenced a generation of artists who proudly blame career choices (and mental problems) on Eerie Publications. One of them, Stephen R. Bissette (Swamp Thing, Taboo, Tyrant), provides the introduction for this volume. Here's the sordid background behind this mysterious comics publisher, featuring astonishingly red reproductions of many covers and the most spectacularly creepy art.
