Visualizing Research guides postgraduate students in art and design through the development and implementation of a research project, using the metaphor of a 'journey of exploration'. For use with a formal programme of study, from masters to doctoral level, the book derives from the creative relationship between research, practice and teaching in art and design. It extends generic research processes into practice-based approaches more relevant to artists and designers, introducing wherever possible visual, interactive and collaborative methods. The Introduction and Chapter 1 'Planning the Journey' define the concept and value of 'practice-based' formal research, tracking the debate around its development and explaining key concepts and terminology. ’Mapping the Terrain’ then describes methods of contextualizing research in art and design (the contextual review, using reference material); ’Locating Your Position’ and ’Crossing the Terrain’ guide the reader through the stages of identifying an appropriate research question and methodological approach, writing the proposal and managing research information. Methods of evaluation and analysis are explored, and of strategies for reporting and communicating research findings are suggested. Appendices and a glossary are also included. Visualizing Research draws on the experience of researchers in different contexts and includes case studies of real projects. Although written primarily for postgraduate students, research supervisors, managers and academic staff in art and design and related areas, such as architecture and media studies, will find this a valuable research reference. An accompanying website www.visualizingresearch.info includes multimedia and other resources that complement the book.

The first methods handbook devoted solely to arts-based research (ABR) is now in a thoroughly updated second edition, featuring a new section on global perspectives plus new chapters on critical approaches and documentary film. The volume explores the synergies between contemporary artistic and research practices and addresses issues in designing, implementing, evaluating, and publishing ABR studies. Chapters are written by leading practitioners of each ABR genre, including those based in literature (such as narrative inquiry, fiction, and poetry); performance (music, dance, ethnodrama); visual arts (drawing, painting, collage, installation art, comics); and audiovisual and multimethod approaches. Team approaches, ethics, social justice concerns, and public scholarship are discussed, as are innovative ways that ABR is used within creative arts therapies, psychology, education, sociology, health sciences, and other disciplines. The companion website includes selected figures from the book in full color, additional online-only figures, and links to online videos of performance pieces. New to This Edition Updated throughout with current research, theory, and ABR examples. Chapters on critical approaches to ABR and on documentary film. Creative Arts Research: Narratives of Methodologies and Practices is an innovative set of essays that grows out of active engagement with arts practice, pedagogy and research. The collection presents a selection of arts-based research projects, their methodologies, practices and guiding philosophies, and throws new light on a range of issues that bring artists, designers, and performers into conversation with one another. The collection weaves together theoretical and applied dimensions of creative arts research. Following Martin Heidegger, the lead authors, Elizabeth Grierson and Laura Brearley situate the text through consideration of ways of framing, knowing and being, looking and listening, analysing, being-with, proposing, acting and reflecting, constructing, performing, deconstructing, and learning. Heidegger’s notion of “gathering” and his proposition, “Questioning builds a way. . . the way is one of thinking” provides the means to link the different chapters. This wide-ranging metaphoric device allows the authors to emphasise a set of fundamental questions concerning epistemologies, ways of knowing, and ontologies, ways of being, and the relations between the two. Their book opens a conceptual space to recognise the diversity of practices that count as creative arts research.

This text introduces readers to definitions and examples of arts-based educational research, presents tensions and questions in the field, and provides exercises for practice. It weaves together critical essays about arts-based research in the literary, visual, and performing arts with examples of artistic products of arts-based research (arts for scholarship’s sake) that illuminate by example. Each artistic example is accompanied by a scholARTist’s statement that includes reflection on how the work of art relates to the scholar’s research interests and practices. Arts-Based Research in Education: Foundations for Practice: helps the reader understand what arts-based research is – tracing the history of the field and providing examples; includes end-of-chapter questions to engage students in practicing arts-based inquiry and to generate class discussion about the material; features a diverse range of contributors -- very established scholars in educational and social science research as well those new to the field; represents a variety of voices – scholars of color, queer and straight orientations, different ages, experience, and nationalities; and presents beautiful illustrations of visual art, data-based poems, plays, short stories, and musical scores. First-of its kind, this volume is intended as a text for arts-based inquiry, qualitative research methods in education, and related courses, and as a resource for faculty, doctoral students, and scholars across the field of social science research methods.
