The mysteries of the fifth Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam have long puzzled students of Vedic cosmography and astronomy. Confronted with a description of the universe that seems much at variance with the information provided by our senses and standard astronomical calculations, foreign observers and even Indian commentators from the middle ages up to the present have concluded that the Bhagavatam`s account elaborated in other Puranas must be mythological. On the other hand the same persons have been much impressed with vedic astronomical treatises the jyotisasastras which provide remarkably accurate measurements of the solar system.

The Vedic cosmology represents one of humanity's most sophisticated and comprehensive attempts to understand the universe as a living, conscious entity operating according to divine principles that govern everything from the movement of celestial bodies to the evolution of consciousness itself. This ancient Indian worldview, preserved in the Vedas and elaborated upon in subsequent texts like the Puranas and Upanishads, presents a cosmos that is simultaneously physical and metaphysical, temporal and eternal, finite and infinite, revealing layers of meaning that continue to inspire both spiritual seekers and scientific thinkers. At the heart of Vedic cosmology lies the concept of Brahman, the ultimate reality that serves as both the material and efficient cause of the universe. Brahman is described as existence-consciousness-bliss absolute, a unified field of pure awareness from which all phenomena emerge and into which they eventually dissolve. This is not a personal deity but rather the very essence of being itself, the unchanging foundation upon which the entire cosmic drama unfolds. The Vedic seers understood that this absolute reality manifests through various levels of existence, creating the appearance of multiplicity while remaining fundamentally one. The creative process begins with the emergence of Hiranyagarbha, the cosmic golden egg or womb, from the depths of Brahman's infinite potential. This primordial matrix contains within itself all the possibilities of manifestation, much like a seed contains the entire tree in potential form. From Hiranyagarbha emerges Brahma, the creative aspect of divinity, who begins the process of cosmic manifestation through the power of thought and word. The Vedic understanding recognizes that creation is fundamentally a mental process, with the universe being projected from cosmic consciousness like a dream arising from the mind of a dreamer.

How did ‘Vedic man’ think about the destiny of man after death and related ethical issues? That heaven was the abode of the gods was undisputed, but was it also accessible to man in his pursuit of immortality? Was there a realm of the deceased or a hell? What terms were used to indicate these ‘yonder worlds’? What is their location in the cosmos and which cosmographic classifications are at the root of these concepts? The articles by Henk Bodewitz collected in this volume, published over a period of 45 years, between 1969 and 2013, deal with these issues on the basis of a systematic philological study of early Vedic texts, from the Ṛgveda to various Brāhmaṇas, Āraṇykas and Upaniṣads.

We are situated in the fifty-first Brahma year of the existence of our Brahma.Inside that Brahma year, we are in the primary Brahma day, called the Varaha Kalpa.Inside that Brahma day, we are in the seventh manvantara and in the 28th maha yuga of that manvantara. This would put us at about the 454th maha yuga of the 1,000 maha yugas that include this day of Brahma.Inside this maha yuga, we are in Kali Yuga. The 5100th year of Kali Yuga will relate to the year 2,000 A.D. That implies that we are genuinely right off the bat in Kali Yuga, and this age will proceed with more than 426,000 additional years.Variation Interpretations of Hindu ChronologyThe "Customary Puranic Model" portrayed above is settled upon by most creators on Hinduism and Yoga. Six distinct creators, recorded toward the finish of this paper, represent this model indistinguishably.A few different creators, some of the notable Hindu instructors, have distributed portrayals of the pattern of ages that vary from the conventional Puranic model. These variation hypotheses are depicted beneath.
