Der Autor geht der Frage nach, ob Vampire als queer gelesen werden können und in ihrem sexuellen Begehren als konsequent potent in Erscheinung treten. Der Begriff queer wird in diesem Zusammenhang als eine Alternative zu heterosexuellen Normierungen bei Figurenkonstruktionen in Literatur, Film und Theater verstanden, die gleichermaßen heteronormative Gesellschaftsstrukturen zu unterwandern vermag. Potent, das zweite Adjektiv in der Fragestellung, verweist bereits auf einen weiteren Themenkomplex. Im Zentrum der Analyse steht hierbei die Konstruktion von Vampiren und ihrem Sexualverhalten. Diese, so die Annahmen, sind vorwiegend männlich, dominant und sexuell aggressiv. Der Ausruf: „This man belongs to me!“ in Bram Stokers Dracula ist Ausgangspunkt einer in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur verhandelten These, der eine homoerotische Neigung Draculas zu Jonathan Harker begründe. Die Figur Carmilla, die in der Novelle von Sheridan Le Fanu titelgebend ist, fungiert als Grundlage für lesbische Vampirdarstellungen. Beide Figuren sind Prototypen zahlreicher Darstellungsvarianzen in zeitgenössischen Narrativen. Diskutiert werden jene, die Vampire als homo- oder bisexuell konstruieren, wobei die Differenzen zwischen weiblichen und männlichen Protagonist*innen herausgearbeitet werden. Gegenstände der Untersuchung, die von einem Kapitel zur aktuellen Forschungsliteratur eingeleitet werden, sind einerseits die historischen und literarischen Vorlagen zu Dracula und Carmilla sowie die HBO Serie True Blood und das 1985 im Schauspiel Bonn uraufgeführte Stück Elfriede Jelineks Krankheit oder Moderne Frauen. Methodisch werden semiotische und Close-Reading-Verfahren zur Anwendung kommen. Narrative und Einzelszenen werden aus der TV-Serie und dem Theaterstück fokussiert, um diese entsprechend der Fragestellungen zu kontextualisieren. Leitfragen der vorliegenden Arbeit sind: Welches Narrativ begründet die Darstellung von Vampiren als homo- oder bisexuell? Wie werden Vampire homo- oder bisexuell inszeniert? Welche Machtverhältnisse werden immanent vermittelt?
