Positive Ageing and Learning from Centenarians evaluates the mechanisms of positive ageing in a uniquely interdisciplinary way to explore the question of how we age and how some people age successfully. Drawing together the findings of recognised longevity researchers from around the world, the book applies an integrated vision to educational and social aspects of human ageing. It examines research into centenarians, and considers most of the disciplines related to longevity and healthy aging and aspects such as education, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, demography, sociology, economics as well as those related to nutrition and biological factors of longevity. The book examines how the results of these scientific investigations could improve the well-being of the oldest olds in the future, especially in the context of ageing societies. It provides an answer to the question of what we can learn from centenarians and what lessons we can from their lifestyle, which can contribute to live longer, better and happier. Based on cutting-edge research, the book will be highly relevant reading for researchers, academics and students in the field of ageing and longevity, mental health research, health science, gerontology and psychology.

Old men – especially those who live alone – remain an understudied group in the gerontological literature, despite their significance to the demographic development. Among the elderly, the proportion of old men living alone is rapidly rising. This book is an anthology of different perspectives on The Old Man. It contains a personal account of becoming an old man, treats ideas about the old man throughout Western cultural history, and presents the first studies on the very old man. It also discusses a wide variety of topics – including alcohol as a prism for male aging; the old man and sexuality, digitization, and masculinities; and the single old man as lonely or just living alone – paying much-needed attention to this long overlooked group. The contributing researchers come from disciplines as different as psychology, philosophy, theology, anthropology, health, and gender studies.

Supercentenarians written by Heiner Maier and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-17 with Social Science categories.

Does human mortality after age 110 continue to rise, level off, or start to decline? This book describes a concerted, international research effort undertaken with the goal of establishing a database that allows the best possible description of the mortality trajectory beyond the age of 110. The International Database on Longevity (IDL) is the result of this ongoing effort. The IDL contains exhaustive information on validated cases of supercentenarians (people 110 years and older) and allows unbiased estimates of mortality after age 110. The main finding is remarkable: human mortality after age 110 is flat at a probability of death of 50% per year. The sixteen chapters of this book discuss age validation of exceptional longevity, data on supercentenarians in a series of countries, structure and contents of the IDL, and statistical analysis of human mortality after age 110. Several chapters include short accounts of specific supercentenarians that add life to demographic research.

Old age psychiatry continues to grow as speciality, driven by research advances, demographics and political will. Psychiatric services and treatments for the old are improving and the outlook for further progress is encouraging. In this new edition of the classic textbook of old age psychiatry, Robin Jacoby and Catherine Oppenheimer have retained the coherent structure of previous editions, approaching the topic under the section headings of basic sciencej, clinical practice, psychiatric services and specific disorders; however, within this logical structure they have conducted a major revision, bringing in a number of new authors and covering the full range of new research. The exciting developments in the field of molecular biology are covered as are the improvements in our understanding of the pathogenesis of the dementias, specifically, although not limited to Alzheimer's Disease. All of the chapters in this new edition have been revised and updated and there are new chapters on quality of life measurement, the economics of care, suicide in old age, hallucinations and functional symptoms in Parkinson's Disease. The team of expert contributors has grown to 62 in number, representing a wide range of specialities and providing input from nine different countries. This has resulted in the most comprehensive and holistic review of the field. Psychiatry in the Elderly continues to be essential reading for trainees, practicing psychiatrists and those in other branches of care whose work brings them into contact with elderly psychiatric patients.

A brief introduction addresses the concept of life span, summarizes methods for date gathering, criteria for inclusion, and provides a graphic summarization of within and among group variation in record life spans. The date is organized in four main tables: mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and fish. The book is useful in demography, fisheries and wildlife biology, ecology, population and evolutionary biology, and gerontology.

This monograph reviews the epidemiological, demographic, and biological basis of population models of human mortality. These investigations were motivated by the desire to better understand the regularities of survival processes among adults -- especially at extreme late ages where empirical data is currently limited. The monograph discusses biological mechanisms, which shape the age-patterns of mortality. The effects of an individual health state, susceptibility to diseases and death, or physical frailty on changes in late age survival are also investigated.
