Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Economic Geography, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, course: Digitalization, Smart Manufacturing, and ‘Smart’ Regions, language: English, abstract: African governments are struggling with enormous unemployment, especially among young people, and poverty. The non-digital labor market does not offer enough employment opportunities for the high number of people who enter the labor market. However, many hurdles are encountered when attempting to seize this opportunity and enable potential digital workers to work in the digital space. This paper aims to promote understanding of issues related to the digital divide, gender digital divide, geographical dispersion of digital work, and adverse digital inclusion. First, the lack of access to ICT is discussed, especially for those living in Sub-Saharan Africa where digital infrastructure is inadequate. It then analyzes the geographic distribution of digital work and examines how this could negatively impact African digital workers and encourage exploitation. In addition, it is discussed that there are also problems with the integration of people into the digital world of work since digital companies benefit from a lack of regulatory framework for digital workers in Sub Saharan Africa and therefore use predatory practices. It is argued that inclusion is not a panacea against poverty as wages for digital workers are particularly low in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both aspects – the digital divide and adverse digital inclusion – are analyzed from a gender perspective. This paper attempts to shed light on inequalities arising from unequal access to digital technology and inequality arising from inclusion in the digital labor market. It ends with a proposal of possible solutions and political implications.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Market research, grade: Overall CPA 3.93., , course: Marketing Management, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of livestock traders' competitive rivalry on market access in pastoral areas. The study focused on how traders' socioeconomic characteristics, livestock production and marketing developments, market supply and demand relations, and business model incorporation into livestock commerce can generate knowledge and best practices for regulating competition and performance in local markets. The rationale for investigating competition and market access factors was based on the fact that livestock-keeping is a source of livelihood depended on by over 60% of the Turkana population. While the majority of livestock development challenges are production-related, competition and market access shortfalls make potential livestock markets inefficient and non-lucrative. Exploratory and descriptive research designs and a mixed-methods research approach were used to structure the study. Data was collected from study populations, i.e., primary market traders (n = 243), secondary market traders (n = 168), and livestock specialists working for the government and civil society (n = 24). T Knowledge generated on livestock production and marketing in pastoral areas for use by government and civil society in effective programming of livestock developments in pastoral areas is the basis for the study's critical implications for theory and practice. To structure, enhance performance, and regulate competition in livestock markets, the study underscores the importance of formulating and implementing business models and strategies leading to the most organized livestock marketing and networking among market stakeholders. The study's findings will guide the development of the livestock sector in drylands, facilitate the creation of value-added product chains for the market, manage pricing, structure market governance, and facilitate market support networks.

Document from the year 2024 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (School of Information Technology), language: English, abstract: In this book, the author demonstrates how Design Science Research (DSR) approach can be used to design a tailor-made technology adoption assessment framework to gauge small-scale farmers found in developing nations' marginalised rural communities' adoption of ICT. The book presents a practical approach to illustrate the implementation process by using small-scale farmers found in the deeply isolated rural areas of Amathole District Municipality (ADM) of South Africa as a case study. The electronic environment (e-environment) created by the digital age continues to see the adoption of various technologies like Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by individuals, nations, and organisations to facilitate development, effectiveness, efficiency, enhance productivity and business opportunities. Technology adoption assessment emerged alongside the rapid adoption of technology in the digital age as a tool to evaluate the factors or determinants that influence and contribute to technology adoption. In the case of developing nations rural societies, because of the socio-economic dynamics of the marginalised rural communities, the design of the assessment tools to gauge technology adoption should capture factors such as suitability, relevance of the technology as well as local context and capacity, social implications, and availability of resources to address the unique challenges faced by the region. This makes the design of technology adoption assessment tools to gauge adoption of technology among marginalised communities in developing countries to follow a tailor-made approach.
