Yet during his lifetime he was unappreciated, and his influence remained negligible - so much so that few of his projects were carried out and thoughtless alterations blunted the impact of a number of his buildings. In this study of Loos' career, the authors examine the architect's revolutionary theories and designs, his uncompromising speeches and writings, and describe the storm of controversy that surrounded this early buildings. For more than thirty years, undeterred by criticism, Loos continued to produce a stream of original, forward-looking designs, making his reputation ultimately with his domestic architecture and housing schemes. Born in Moravia in 1870, the son of a stone-cutter and sculptor, Loos was trained in Dresden and the United States before settling in Vienna in 1896, where, at the turn of the century, he was one of the first architects to reject the Art Nouveau style. Conceiving a functional system of design based on finding '"beauty in form instead of making it depend on ornament," he achieved - far ahead of his time - an elegant, austere, delicately proportioned style of architecture that we today consider modern. A rare opportunity to see Loos' buildings in their original state is offered by the illustrations in this book, which Ludwig Münz began to assemble while the architect was still alive.
