Unpacking Globalization examines the experiences of people living with the forces that are transforming economic systems, culture, gender relationships and governance. The book offers interdisciplinary analysis of the well-being of women and men as they cope with the changes of globalization. Through theory, case studies, and data, several themes emerge indicating that from the household to the continental level, change is leading to new awareness and new survival strategies for both women and men. The contributors to the volume come from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America. They present analysis of global changes and historical background from diverse perspectives and offer case studies on social security, gender, and macroeconomy. They employ feminist theory as well as detail the experiences of current and future women entrepreneurs. An exciting interdisciplinary text, Unpacking Globalization can supplement women's studies, anthropology, sociology, and economic development courses.

In an increasingly global world, societies are being provisioned from a bewildering array of sources as new countries and new food commodities are drawn into international markets. Globalising Food provides an innovative contribution to the area of political economy of agriculture, food and consumption through a revealing investigation of the globalisation and restructuring of localised agricultural sectors and food systems. The book draws on new theoretical perspectives and wide-ranging case studies from Britain, the USA, India, South Africa, New Zealand and Latin America. The key themes addresses range from giant multinational food corporations, rural industrialisation and World Bank policies, to the regulation of pollution, labour relations, urban food politics and environmental sustainability. Globalising Food offers important insights into the problems, consequences and limits of the industrialisation of agriculture and the provisioning of food in a global world as we approach the new millenium.

Education is a vital institution for balancing the excesses of globalisation and changing understandings of civic and global responsibility. However, education policy often bows to promoting education that dovetails with a global economy increasingly predicated on consumption and competition. What can teachers do? Under these circumstances, is policy for education really about education? Deployed to Deliver: Teachers in Globalised Education Systems investigates these and other questions and the dilemmas they pose for national, international and supranational educational policy makers, educators, social theorists and practitioners. It works from the premise that education policy for a knowledge society necessitates a critical analysis of global agencies and how they reconstruct education for a global economy. If we are to understand that education has its negative and positive manifestations and possibilities, we need to go beyond the simplistic agendas of global agencies and problematise the view of the future.

This book is a study of the effects of global influences on local activity in relation to the land laws in some urban and peri-urban localities in three African countries. It begins with a theoretical consideration of the concept of globalization and of the way in which it may inform research in the social scientific study of law. The three chapters which form the core of the book are detailed, empirical studies of the effects of globalizing processes on the living land laws observed in selected communities in Benin, Ghana and Tanzania. The last chapter consists of some comparative conclusions. The study is part of the interdisciplinary research program on "Local Action in Africa in the Context of Global Influences" (Humanities Collaborative Research Centre, SFB/FK 560) at the University of Bayreuth, Germany.
