The reigning line descends from William, the third son of Johann III., the ancestor of the living Ernestine line. In 1672 the house was divided into the lines of Weimar, Eisenach, and Jena. That of Jena became extinct in 1690, and the countries were ain united in 1741 under Ernst August.
