Ritual language, wild and domestic animals, and objects of material culture like houses, palaces, and works of art, are often loaded with symbolic meaning. ‘Reading the landscape’, or giving meaning to the natural environment, is a cultural act as well, and one must discover what mountains, coastlines, and islands mean to different groups of people. In this book, written on the occasion of Professor Reimar Schefold’s retirement from the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Leiden University, colleagues and former students from the Netherlands and abroad demonstrate the variety and wealth of the field of symbolic anthropology. The regional focus of the book is Indonesia. The studies presented range from small island communities in western, northern, and eastern Indonesia to urban settlements in Java and Sumatra. All the contributions are in one way or another related to Reimar Schefold’s work over the past thirty-five years, work that includes extensive studies on material culture, rituals, and the use of symbols in the expression of ethnicity among the various cultural groups of Indonesia.

2016年深夜，站在信義路上，隨著台北101的美妙煙火，跨入2017年。這一次的煙火秀深獲大眾的好評，煙火加上燈光秀，勾勒出相當具有國際水準的視覺效果，讓人目不暇給、深刻難忘。每年的跨年煙火，可說是我們進入全新一年所看見的第一個景象，隨著今年煙火美感的提升，也讓人對2017年充滿了希望啊！我們生活的環境正在改變當中，城市各處的視覺美感以緩慢但前進的腳步，逐漸改善當中，只要細心留意便不難發現，藝術圈也是如此。 1月號的《焦點藝術》封面藝術家為日本新銳藝術家山本雄基（Yuki Yamamoto），在無數火火熱熱的圓點作品面前，竟然還有年輕藝術家繼續以圓點為繪畫主題，光想到這件事，起初還真令人不可思議，圓點還能有什麼樣的新意呢？尚未四十歲的日本藝術家山本雄基卻在我們眼前呈現了截然不同的新意。他1981年出生在日本北海道的帶廣市（Obihiro），目前工作與生活於北海道的札幌（Sapporo），從事圓點的繪畫創作已經超過了十年。 隨著山本雄基的圓點繪畫，編輯團隊策劃了「圓點」專題，收錄了包括草間彌生、金昌烈（Kim Tschang Yeul）、約翰．巴爾德薩里（John Baldessari ）、名坂有子（Yuko Nasaka）、喬治．盧斯（Georges Rousse）、黛博拉．魯斯特（Deborah Luster）、安尼旭．卡普爾（Anish Kapoor）、尚．福舍爾（Jean Faucheur）、達敏．赫斯特（Damien Hirst）、科特．波斯基（Kurt Perschke）、芙洛．奧斯頓（Fleur Alston）、艾咪．弗里安德（Amy Friend）、吳竟銍等十三位藝術家作品，相當精彩而豐富，一個如此簡單的極簡造形「圓」，竟然在藝術家的概念中，能衍生出這麼多令人驚豔的創作。 國際大展中，2017年初春最重要的特展就是泰特美術館的大衛．霍克尼（David Hockney）回顧展，展品預計超過160件，從早期1960年代的油畫，到近期因應潮流以iPad創作的作品，也有許多代表作如：1960年至1961年展現出同性情感的繪畫，還有他為家人、朋友和自己創作的肖像，以及1970年後移居洛杉磯的著名「泳池」系列，以及南加州的建築風景畫、2000年後回到出生地約克郡所繪的風景畫，以及2013年回到美國加州後的新作等，可說非常令人期待！ 另一位我們較不熟悉的藝術家克里斯蒂安．海戴格（Christian Herdeg），因為與化學家合作，共同開發出能夠調節惰性氣體燈光色度的螢光粉混合物，用以完成符合心中理想標準、能達到更精細分級的螢光燈「調色盤」，目前已知至少增加了300色，展現出霓虹燈光影的奇妙變化。 回顧部分包括兩場在台灣舉行的重要藝術博覽會：台北國際藝術博覽會以及高雄藝術博覽會，另外可看到吳逸寒、季勇、盧征遠、林葆靈近期個展的作品。加速的時代，預告了藝術的變化，讓我們一起發掘2017年那些令人振奮的藝術吧！
