Selon les lexicographes, la haine n’est ni tout à fait un sentiment ni tout à fait une émotion, mais plutôt une passion funeste. Pour se nourrir et prospérer, elle a de plus souvent besoin de temps. Balzac écrivait que les meilleures haines, ce sont les haines entre soi, dans la famille. Toutefois, comme l’écrivait Tocqueville, elle peut aussi surgir sur la scène publique. Elle peut être plurielle, systématisée, et donner naissance à des « doctrines ». Depuis les années 1960, la haine est évoquée dans les travaux historiques sans avoir fait l’objet de recherches spécifiques. Lucien Febvre avait souligné qu’il faudrait entreprendre une histoire de la haine. De son côté, la sociologie ne l’a guère abordée et les autres sciences humaines l’ont souvent délaissée. Toutefois, la visée du présent ouvrage n’est pas d’en donner un système explicatif, ni de la réduire à des aspects psychologiques, ni d’en livrer une histoire globale. Il propose un certain nombre d’études, afin de resituer les mouvements haineux dans un ensemble de contextes inscrit d’abord dans la durée. Le premier volet restitue des « moments haineux », de l’Antiquité à nos jours et en propose un certain éclairage. La deuxième partie explore des lieux et des régions d’expression, de production, de relégation ou de régulation de sentiments haineux. à travers le choix de terrains et d’objets contrastés, il est possible de voir que la haine n’est pas seulement une passion extérieure au fonctionnement normal des sociétés ou des groupes sociaux, mais qu’elle fait l’objet d’une véritable prise en charge sociale et collective. Les contributions rassemblées sous le titre « Supports » montrent que la haine vit, se transforme et meurt parfois. Elle peut être colportée par la mémoire familiale, les discussions entre soi, le bouche-à-oreille. Elle peut être aussi l’objet de controverses juridiques, s’exprimer dans un serment ou une revue prestigieuse, envahir les images au point de saturer parfois l’imaginaire graphique. Enfin, la dernière partie se soucie d’analyser la haine du point de vue des personnes ou des personnages, des groupes sur lesquels elle se porte et se focalise.
