The past decade has seen an explosion of lifestyle makeover TV shows. Audiences around the world are being urged to ‘renovate’ everything from their homes to their pets and children while lifestyle experts on TV now tell us what not to eat and what not to wear. Makeover television and makeover culture is now ubiquitous and yet, compared with reality TV shows like Big Brother and Survivor, there has been relatively little critical attention paid to this format. This exciting collection of essays written by leading media scholars from the UK, US and Australia aims to reveal the reasons for the huge popularity and influence of the makeover show. Written in a lively and accessible manner, the essays brought together here will help readers ‘make sense’ of makeover TV by offering a range of different approaches to understanding the emergence of this popular cultural phenomenon. Looking at a range of shows from The Biggest Loser to Trinny and Susannah Undress, essays include an analysis of how and why makeover TV shows have migrated across such a range of TV cultures, the social significance of the rise of home renovation shows, the different ways in which British versus American audiences identify with makeover shows, and the growing role of lifestyle TV in the context of neo-liberalism in educating us to be ‘good’ citizens. This book was published as a special issue of Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies.

Self reinvention has become a preoccupation of contemporary culture. In the last decade, Hollywood made a 500-million-dollar bet on this idea with movies such as Multiplicity, Fight Club, eXistenZ, and Catch Me If You Can. Self reinvention marks the careers of Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Martha Stewart, and Robin Williams. The Nike ads of LeBron James, the experiments of New Age spirituality, the mores of contemporary teen culture, and the obsession with "extreme makeovers" are all examples of our culture's fixation with change. In a time marked by plenitude, transformation is one of the few things these parties have in common. Although transformation is widely acknowledged as a defining characteristic of our culture, we have almost no studies on what it is or how it works. Transformations offers the first comprehensive and systematic view. It is an ethnography of the contemporary world.

""TV Transformations"" presents a fascinating journey through television's technological evolution, from John Logie Baird's mechanical invention in 1925 to today's sophisticated quantum dot displays. This comprehensive exploration focuses on three pivotal transitions that revolutionized television: the mechanical-to-electronic shift, analog-to-digital broadcasting transformation, and the rise of internet streaming platforms. Through accessible explanations of complex engineering concepts, the book illuminates how each advancement built upon previous innovations while creating new possibilities for content delivery and viewing experiences. Drawing from engineering documents, patent filings, and pioneer interviews, the book meticulously traces how competing technologies like plasma and LCD displays drove innovation and shaped consumer choices. The narrative expertly weaves together technical developments—from cathode ray tubes to OLED displays—with their broader social implications, demonstrating how television technology both responded to and influenced changing viewer habits. The chronological progression helps readers understand how each technological era laid the groundwork for subsequent breakthroughs. The book bridges the gap between technical expertise and general interest, making it valuable for both engineering professionals and casual readers. It explores contemporary challenges in display technology, including environmental considerations in manufacturing and the complex supply chains behind modern screens. By connecting television's development to advances in semiconductor physics, signal processing, and computer networking, the book provides a comprehensive understanding of how these interconnected innovations continue to shape the future of visual entertainment.
