This study is concerned with how university teachers perceive their own academic and teaching roles, and especially with how they see their teaching activities in relation to their other responsibilities and institutional reward systems. Data were collected in 1973-74 by postal questionnaire from 800 teaching staff (representing a 65 response rate) in six Australian universities. After presenting basic information about the respondents, the findings are reported and discussed in relation to the following themes: the purposes of a university, career advancement, attitudes to students and teaching, methods of teaching and the ways in which they are reviewed, and the connections between teaching and other components of the academic role. The major outcomes of the study are then used as the basis for a discussion of ways in which the behaviour and attitudes of university teachers may be interpreted and understood, and how excellence in teaching might be promoted and supported.
