Virtually every revolution in architecture has been preceded by a revolution in materials: think iron, glass, steel, concrete, plastics, or composites. What is the next revolutionary material that will reshape the very nature of architecture? A solid that's lighter than air, metal latticework so delicate it rests on a dandelion, building insulation made from processed seaweed, self-generating microbial glue that repairs cracks in concrete, or transparent solar panels? Materials expert Blaine Brownell, author of our bestselling Transmaterial series, reveals emerging trends and applications that are transforming the technological capacity, environmental performance, and design potential of architecture in Transmaterial Next. This book is an essential compendium for thinking architects, designers, and other creative professionals passionate about materials and looking for their bleeding edge and practical implementation.

Explore pivotal intersections and themes between strategies for buildings and cities to adapt to shifting circumstances. Sustainable Design for Uncertain Futures introduces fourteen time-based strategies in architecture through a series of dialogues between experts. This format embraces a dynamic exploration of strategies ranging from Adaptive Reuse to Bio Design, revealing how each one addresses forces of change and adds adaptive capacity to the built environment. The book’s structure invites readers to engage with these strategies on multiple levels. Each chapter begins with a framing of the fundamentals, providing context and key examples to situate the strategies in the wider field. At the core of each chapter is a moderated dialogue that offers key insights into how these strategies work in practice and how they can be used in combination. By presenting these strategies through dialogue, the editors demonstrate the collaborative thinking needed to address growing uncertainty in the built environment and provide readers with an actionable framework of technical and management approaches. The book’s practical focus helps bridge the gap between theory and application, making this edited volume an invaluable resource for both academics and practitioners. Readers will find dialogues involving fifteen renowned experts in their respective fields: Avi Friedman & Naomi Keena (Mass Customization) ↔ Michael Fox (Computationally Responsive Environments) / Bie Plevoets (Adaptive Reuse) ↔ John Dale (Open Building) / Aki Ishida (Metabolism) ↔ Michelle Laboy (Persistence) / Felix Heisel (Circular Construction) ↔ Jenni Minner (Preservation) / Kim Trogal (Repair) ↔ Brad Guy (Design for Disassembly & Adaptability) / Sarah Wigglesworth (Inclusive Design) ↔ Irena Bauman (Resilience) / Doris Sung (Smart Materials) ↔ Mitchell Joachim (Bio Design) Sustainable Design for Uncertain Futures presents: The fundamentals of each strategy, along with a short summary of each with its affordances and challenges and a few key examples The editors’ theory of primary time signatures, enabling readers to see and plan the combination of different time-based strategies to increase building lifecycle coverage for adaptive capacity Critical insights from thought leaders across a wide spectrum of approaches to sustainability Academics, practitioners, and others interested in change in the built environment can use the strategies discussed in Sustainable Design for Uncertain Futures to develop architectural solutions that accommodate climate change, shifting demographics, new live-work patterns, and many other uncertainties.

Dynamic Light Filters written by Isabel Dias Cabral and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-21 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book offers an extensive, interdisciplinary overview of dynamic textiles. Specifically, it discusses new findings and design concepts concerning the integration of smart materials into textile substrates and their corresponding dynamic behavior. Introducing the topic of dynamic color in textiles, it presents experimental procedures to achieve color change and dynamic light transmittance in thermochromic textiles, and examines their thermoresponsive behavior and respective electrical activation. Moreover, it also addresses the topic of dynamic form and reports on the authors’ original findings using shape-memory alloys and geometric morphologies based on origami techniques. Covering innovative smart textiles and important considerations in terms of design variables when developing textiles with dynamic qualities, and providing extensive, practice-oriented insights into the interaction of textiles with light, it is primarily intended for academics, researchers and practitioners developing smart, dynamic and interactive textiles. The sections describing in detail the experimental work aimed at the integration of smart materials in textile substrates also appeal to professionals in the textile industry.

In a world where life is increasingly defined by the spaces we inhabit, understanding interiors is essential to understanding ourselves. The Interiors Theory Primer maps the intellectual terrain of interior design and spatial experience, introducing readers to key concepts that shape how people occupy interior spaces. Organized into three parts, this book begins with foundational concerns, such as place, identity, materiality, and atmosphere, and then examines the boundaries and expertise of the discipline, before turning to critical and emerging topics like biophilia, virtuality, and social justice. Each chapter presents a focused literature review of a major theme in interiors theory, supported by key design precedents and suggestions for further reading. Drawing on a wide range of scholarship, The Interiors Theory Primer offers a coherent framework for understanding interiors as a distinct, interdisciplinary field deeply embedded in the human condition. Accessible to students, useful to professionals, and provocative for scholars, The Interiors Theory Primer argues that the designed environments in which we live, work, and gather deserve greater attention—not only for their aesthetic and functional qualities but also for their powerful role in shaping contemporary life.

The Science Of Near Death Experiences written by John C. Hagan and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-30 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.
What happens to consciousness during the act of dying? The most compelling answers come from people who almost die and later recall events that occurred while lifesaving resuscitation, emergency care, or surgery was performed. These events are now called near-death experiences (NDEs). As medical and surgical skills improve, innovative procedures can bring back patients who have traveled farther on the path to death than at any other time in history. Physicians and healthcare professionals must learn how to appropriately treat patients who report an NDE. It is estimated that more than 10 million people in the United States have experienced an NDE. Hagan and the contributors to this volume engage in evidence-based research on near-death experiences and include physicians who themselves have undergone a near-death experience. This book establishes a new paradigm for NDEs.

Global Development written by Brij Mohan and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Business & Economics categories.
This intriguing book's focus on post-material consciousness, a concept that has not been developed in American literature, offers a fresh perspective on the human condition and its social development as a vehicle of global welfare. Brij Mohan contends that post-modern societies, despite their affluence and the superpower thaw, remain in a state of flux, and that the traditional approaches on the Left and Right have failed to present a viable program for peace, development, and prosperity. Mohan's formulation is premised on three assumptions: existing ideologies, theories, and practices of national and international development are fraught with contradictions and anomalies; the world climate and its challenges call for a new thinking beyond bureaucratized disciplines; and post-material consciousness lends support to a bio-global strategy that is conceptually compatible with humankind's ultimate agenda for coexistence based on justice, equality, and peace. Part One deals with theoretical considerations in light of contemporary social events, and Part Two offers comparative analyses of three different societies--the United States, Germany, and India--with a particular emphasis on social development issues. Concepts such as end of history, end of ideology, and even third world are called into question. Global Development, premised on the notion of humanity's one-ness, unravels the paradoxes of diversity and offers a rational, humane basis for a dignified existence of the human race beyond the ossified structures of conceptual boundaries and organizational morass.
