As translation plays an increasingly important role in industry, science, technology, commerce, politics and the international economy, the search for better, more informed methods of translation proceeds on a global scale. New, sometimes competing, models for describing translation are being developed and applied. These new models are interdisciplinary, borrowing concepts from linguistics, literary criticism, cognitive science, psychology, and sociology.

Clear and accessible, this textbook provides a step-by-step guide to textual analysis for beginning translators and translation students. Covering a variety of text types, including business letters, recipes, and museum guides in six languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish), this book presents authentic, research-based materials to support translation among any of these languages. Translating Texts will provide beginning translators with greater text awareness, a critical skill for professional translators. Including discussions of the key theoretical texts underlying this text-centred approach to translation and sample rubrics for (self) assessment, this coursebook also provides easy instructions for creating additional corpora for other text types and in other languages. Ideal for both language-neutral and language-specific classroom settings, this is an essential text for undergraduate and graduate-level programs in modern languages and translation. This collection seeks to expand the centers from which scholars theorize translation, building on themes in Rosemary Arrojo’s pioneering work on transfiction and the influence of bordering disciplines in investigating and elucidating questions central to the field of translation studies. Chapters by scholars around the world theorize translation from diverse perspectives, drawing on a wide range of literatures, genres, and media, including fiction, philosophy, drama, and film. Half the chapters explore the influence of Rosemary Arrojo’s work on transfiction and the ways in which fictional representations of translators and translation can shed new light on theoretical concerns. The other chapters look to fields outside translation studies, such as linguistics, media studies, and philosophy, to demonstrate the ways in which the key thinkers and theories that have influenced Arrojo’s work can be seen in other disciplines and in turn, encourage further cross-disciplinary research interrogating key questions in the field. The collection makes the case for a multi-layered approach to theorizing translation, one which accounts for the rich possibilities in revisiting existing work and thinking outside disciplinary boundaries in order to advance the field. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in translation studies and comparative literature.

From the perspective of philosophical contrastive pragmatics, this study investigates our multiple selves as manifested in how we use language. Based on analyses of original and translation texts of Japanese and English literary works, the Japanese self is proposed as being fundamentally empty and yet richly populated with multiple subjective aspects, characters, and characteristics. Incorporating the concept of emptiness drawn from Japanese philosophical traditions and postmodernism primarily developed in the West, selves evidenced in grammar, style, and variation are investigated applying interpretive resources of linguistic subjectivity, character, and character-speak. Expressive gaps found in source and target texts across two languages lead us toward different ontological views, and guide us to engage in the rethinking of the concept of self.

This book introduces students to the theory and practice of translation. It also examines issues that are often debated such as the concept of meaning, translation as an art or science, fallacies of translation, and translation rules and ethics. Chapters in this book can be used to teach any course introducing students to the field of translation. One of the distinguishing features is that there is a set of questions found at the end of each chapter that tests the student's knowledge of the information covered. In addition, some relevant texts are provided for students to translate into the target language, something that is hardly ever found in textbooks on translation. In addition, the book introduces legal and scientific translation and offers real life examples that have been carefully selected for classroom practice. Translating The Perception Of Text

Translating The Perception Of Text written by Clive Scott and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Phenomenology categories.
Translation often proceeds as if languages already existed, as if the task of the translator were to make an appropriate selection from available resources. Clive Scott challenges this tacit assumption. If the translator is to do justice to himself/herself as a reader, if the translator is to become the creative writer of his/her reading, then the language of translation must be equal to the translators perceptual experience of, and bodily responses to, source texts. Each renewal of perceptual and physiological contact with a text involves a renewal of the ways we think language and use our expressive faculties (listening, speaking, writing). Phenomenology and particularly the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty underpins this new approach to translation. The task of the translator is tirelessly to develop new translational languages, ever to move beyond the bilingual into the multilingual, and always to remember that language is as much an active instrument of perception as an object of perception. Clive Scott is Professor Emeritus of European Literature at the University of East Anglia, and a Fellow of the British Academy. (Legenda Main Series, 2012)

"The volume includes descriptions of sophisticated electronic databases and corpora of audiovisual products for the big and small screen, and the rationale behind them. Furthermore, Between Text and Image also includes a number of cutting edge studies in audience perception of audiovisual products." "Finally, the volume does not fail to ignore examples of original research carried out from both a traditional linguistic viewpoint and from a more cultural perspective."--P. [4] de la couv.

Legal Translation And The Dictionary written by Marta Chromá and has been published by de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Foreign Language Study categories.
This study concentrates on three major issues creating a basis for the making of the "Czech-English Law Dictionary with Explanations", namely language, including terminology, in both the Czech and Anglo-American systems of law; the process of legal translation; and the lexicographic method of producing a bilingual law dictionary. Terminology has been considered the most significant feature of language for legal purposes. It encompasses a wide range of special-purpose vocabulary and higher syntactic units, including legal jargon. Conceptual analysis is to be pursued whenever an identical term in the target language does not exist or its full equivalent is in doubt. Legal translation should be based primarily on comparative legal, linguistic and genre analysis in order to make the transfer of legal information as precise, accurate and comprehensible as possible. The primary objective of legal translation is for the target recipient to be provided as explicit, extensive and precise legal information in the target language as is contained in the source text, complemented (by the translator) with facts rendering the original information fully comprehensible in the different legal environment and culture. A dictionary which will help its users to produce legal texts in the target language should be founded upon a profound comparative legal and linguistic analysis that will (a) determine equivalents at the levels of vocabulary, syntax and genre, (b) select the appropriate lexicographic material to be included in the dictionary, and (c) create entries in a user-friendly manner.
