This book provides a longitudinal study of developing country involvement in multilateral trade negotiations. The trade regime established at the end of the Second World War did not cater for, and in some cases excluded, the developmental interests of the newly independent countries. This book offers a detailed analysis of: The first attempts to revise the trade regime in the 1960s through the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and the formation of the Group of 77 to enhance their bargaining potential. The mixed coalition strategy, with the Cairns Group in the Uruguay Round of GATT. The new bargaining coalition, the Group of Twenty, that took on a much more confrontational and assertive bargaining position in the unsuccessful Doha round of the World Trade Organization. In part two, the author explores the possibility that economic globalization may finally deliver to developing countries what they had failed to achieve in five decades of multilateral negotiations - an opportunity to climb the industrialization ladder and achieve development. The book offers a proposal for revising the format of trade negotiations in a way that helps overcome stalemates and deadlocks. In recent years the relationships between trade and the environment, and trade and development, have become increasingly complex. The need to reconcile the competing demands of economic growth, economic development, and environmental protection has become central to the multilateral trade agenda. In this volume various commentators debate the role of the World Trade Organization and other institutions in addressing these challenges. The book arises from the papers presented at two High Level Symposia hosted by the World Trade Organization in March 1999, on Trade and the Environment and Trade and Development. The first section of the work focuses on the relationship between trade and the environment. The issues addressed include the need for WTO members to pursue integrated trade and environmental policies in order to achieve sustainable development, ways in which the removal of trade restrictions and distortions can lead to positive environmental and development solutions, the relationship between WTO provisions and trade measures contained in environmental agreements, and the need for transparency and effective interaction between civil society and the trade community. Therefore, Fair Trade has been born to abandon the unfairness within the North-South trade relationship due to globalization and to create fair rules for world trade. Coffee is hereby of symbolic character for the global Fair Trade movement and has still the largest share within the Fair Trade market. Furthermore, its origin lies in Ethiopia. Accordingly, it is the largest African coffee producer and still provides the original Arabica coffee bean that shows the greatest genetic pool in the world. Therefore, in the following paper Fair Trade in the Ethiopean coffee market will be analyzed from an economic ethics perspective applying the Ordonomic research approach. This is a rational choice analysis which looks on the interdependency of institutional rules and mind categories within the globalizing context. By using the three-tiered model, answers to three main questions will be given. The first concentrates on which dilemma structures are prevailing in the North-South trade relationship. The second focuses on conflicts which are present in public discourse and finally the third question asks for implications that are given for the rule-setting process and how Fair Trade works hereby as an instrument of New Governance. It will be shown that moral commitments initiated by Fair Trade help to overcome prisoner dilemmas and the deficit rule-framework in the global coffee market. New Governance and Global Corporate Citizenship are thereby complementary. The accompanying international trade affects industrial nations and developing countries in differing degrees. The analysis of trade policy in developing countries can, in the process, be analyzed using the same tools as those for developed countries, namely industrial na-tions. Earlier development stages of trade policy amongst developing countries were character-ized by protectionism and an orientation towards a domestic market which consequently led to a weak internationalization of these countries. It was not possible to decrease the distance between the classical industrial states since the industrial states themselves, in the context of the first phase of globalization, were able to significantly advance on a global scale. As a result of the rejection of protectionism by means of changing political structures and the accompanying liberalization, it was therefore possible, in the early phases of globaliza-tion, whose origins lie in the end of the 19th and the start of the 20th century, for several developing countries to successfully advance in the wake of the general dynamic of inter-nationalization. The share in the world good's market; the volumes in direct investments and the inflows of portfolio capital were able to increase amongst these groups of countries, albeit not for all countries to the same extent. As a result, the majority of developing countries today are tightly embedded in world trade. Moreover, these countries were capable of registering export quotas of 20% and 30%. The gap between the so-called OECD countries could be largely made up for. In the course of early globalization, the OECD countries also dynamically developed with the consequence that many developing countries were, in turn
