Topics in Mathematical Modeling is an introductory textbook on mathematical modeling. The book teaches how simple mathematics can help formulate and solve real problems of current research interest in a wide range of fields, including biology, ecology, computer science, geophysics, engineering, and the social sciences. Yet the prerequisites are minimal: calculus and elementary differential equations. Among the many topics addressed are HIV; plant phyllotaxis; global warming; the World Wide Web; plant and animal vascular networks; social networks; chaos and fractals; marriage and divorce; and El Niño. Traditional modeling topics such as predator-prey interaction, harvesting, and wars of attrition are also included. Most chapters begin with the history of a problem, follow with a demonstration of how it can be modeled using various mathematical tools, and close with a discussion of its remaining unsolved aspects. Designed for a one-semester course, the book progresses from problems that can be solved with relatively simple mathematics to ones that require more sophisticated methods. The math techniques are taught as needed to solve the problem being addressed, and each chapter is designed to be largely independent to give teachers flexibility. The book, which can be used as an overview and introduction to applied mathematics, is particularly suitable for sophomore, junior, and senior students in math, science, and engineering.

Uncovering mechanisms regulating immune system responses is key to strengthening and redirecting them whenever necessary in cancer and infections as well as understanding autoimmune diseases. However, research in this area is hampered by heterogeneity at the cellular and physiological levels, making analysis of experimental and clinical data extremely difficult. Black-box models employed by artificial intelligence, while very helpful in data analysis, do not provide explanations about these mechanisms and their dynamics. On the other hand, mathematical models of dynamics of intercellular interactions and intracellular processes provide means to build up and preliminary test hypotheses about regulatory network structure and dynamics at any chosen level. Moreover, they facilitate simulation-based studies of potential treatment protocols, thus accelerating advances in clinical practice. This Research Topic focuses on mathematical modeling applied to understand, uncover, and utilize mechanisms involved in immune system responses at intracellular, tissue and physiological levels. We look forward to novel models supported by experimental and clinical data and bringing biologically or clinically relevant conclusions. The Topic’s goal is to advance knowledge in this area, to be utilized in new development of new molecular targets for future drugs and new therapy protocols. Through presenting original conclusions stemming from mathematical analyses, it should promote interdisciplinary research, linking molecular biologists, clinicians and modelers, showing benefits of mathematical support in clinically-oriented research. This volume contains invited lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and related topics, held in. Lyon (France), April 27 - 30, 1987. This conference was planned to fit in with the two-month visit of Professor G.S.S. Ludford to the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. He kindly agreed to chair the Scientific and Organizing Committee and actively helped to initiate the meeting. His death in December 1986 is an enormous loss to the scientific community in general, and in particular, to the people involved in the present enterprise. The subject of mathematical modeling in combustion is too large for a single conference, and the selection of topics re flects both areas of recent research activity and areas of in terest to Professor G.S.S. Ludford, to whose memory the Advanced Workshop and this present volume are dedicated. The meeting was divided into seven specialized sessions detonation theory, mathematical analysis, numerical treatment of combustion problems, flame theory, experimental and industrial aspects, complex chemistry, and turbulent combustion. It brought together researchers and engineers from University and Industry (see below the closing remarks of the workshop by Prof. N. Peters). The articles in this volume have been judged and accepted on their scientific quality, and language corrections may have been sacrificed in order to allow quick dissemination of knowledge to prevail.
