Tak terkecuali bagi Wardoyo, Sumirat, Kintel, dan Kedasih—empat tokoh yang menggerakkan cerita dalam novel ini. Tirai Memurun ditulis Nh. Dini dengan menggunakan pembabakan pentas wayang orang. Kisah keempat tokoh tersebut dimulai ketika Republik Indonesia Serikat baru kembali menjadi negara kesatuan. Empat tokoh tersebut sekaligus wakil dari arus perpindahan penduduk dari kawasan pedesaan ke kawasan urban, yakni Semarang. Seperti seorang dalang, Nh. Dini membuka tirai, melakonkan wayang, menghidupkan cerita, dan memotret kondisi sosial masyarakat pada masa itu.
