The American Cancer Society recently estimated that about 45,000 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, with three-quarters occurring in women. The overall 5-year survival rate is about 97%, making it one of the least lethal cancers. We are experiencing an epidemic of well-differentiated thyroid cancer, in part due to the widespread use of imaging modalities that detect thyroid nodules and microcarcinomas. Concurrently, there have been a number of recent advances in surgical treatment, as well as diagnostic modalities that allow us to detect small amounts of residual local and metastatic disease. Additionally, a reexamination of past treatment regimens has led to new recommendations regarding the use of radioactive iodine, and to new therapeutic options, such as targeted therapy which have supplanted the use of more toxic chemotherapy for metastatic cancer. Multiple academic organizations have developed consensus guidelines for the management of thyroid cancer, occasionally with conflicting recommendations. In Thyroid Cancer, a renowned group of authors presents a broad overview of the pathology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of thyroid cancer, with an emphasis on recent evidence-based information. State-of-the-art and a significant contribution to the literature, Thyroid Cancer is an invaluable reference for endocrinologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiation oncologists, primary care physicians, and surgeons who deal with head and neck cancer.

Thyroid cancer is the most common malignant endocrine tumor and is the seventh most common cancer seen in throughout out the world. The incidence of thyroid cancer has been increasing more rapidly than any other cancer in many of the cancer registries from different parts of the world. Although the majority of thyroid cancers have an indolent biological behaviour, different histological types have a diverse clinical behaviour. Well-differentiated thyroid cancers have an excellent survival, whereas poorly differentiated and anaplastic thyroid cancers have a very poor outcome. This volume of Head and Neck Cancer Clinics addresses advances, controversies and state-of-the-art treatment recommendations of various types of thyroid cancers.

Thyroid Cancer written by H.-J. Biersack and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-14 with Medical categories.

Thyroid cancer was first described at the end of the eighteenth cen tury. For one and a half centuries surgery remained the only effective therapeutic option for this cancer, until in 1946 radioiodine therapy was performed for the first time. Radioiodine therapy was brought to Germany 4 years later, in 1950. In the intervening 50 years, the use of iodine-131 has proved able to cure the cancer and its metastases. Per cutaneous radiation therapy had been added to the therapeutic ar mamentarium, but even now there is heated debate as to its potential. Suppressive 1-thyroxine supplement is a prerequisite for successful treatment, while cytotoxic drugs are mainly used for palliation. During the past 10 years, various new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches have been introduced. High-dose radioiodine therapy as well as redifferentiation therapy with retinoic acid seem beneficial. Diagnostic procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), as well as isonitriles (MIBI) 201 and thallium ( Tl), have proved useful for the follow-up of thyroid cancer. Two special issues are also discussed in this book. Iodine supple mentation in areas of iodine deficiency has led to a change in pathol ogy insofar as papillary thyroid cancer (with a better prognosis) has become more frequent than follicular carcinoma. A special chapter is dedicated to thyroid cancer in Chernobyl children.

Cancer of the thyroid gland may be a less common condition than carcinoma of the breast, lung, or colon, but it occurs with suf?cient frequency to constitute a major problem that is of concern to general practitioners, physicians, and particularly s- geons. Some idea of the frequency of thyroid carcinoma is given by its incidence in the United States. Every year some 26,000 patients are diagnosed there as suffering from thyroid cancer.Comparable ?gures apply to most countries in Europe although the in- dence does vary somewhat from country to country, perhaps depending on the endo- nous iodine intake.Of the 21,000 patients diagnosed annually in the United States, two thirds will be women, and some 800 will die of the disease during the year. This book should do much to improve the outcome in the treatment of thyroid cancer. First because it is written by a small team of experts of international repute. Secondly their wide experience of the condition allows them to write with authority and thirdly they express their views in clear and commendable English.
