Uncovers what Christian seminaries taught about Islam in their formative years Throughout the nineteenth century, Islam appeared regularly in the curricula of American Protestant seminaries. Islam was not only the focus of Christian missions, but was studied as part of the history of the Church as well as in the new field of comparative religions. Moreover, Arabic was taught as a cognate biblical language to help students better understand biblical Hebrew. Passages from the Qur’an were sometimes read as part of language instruction. Christian seminaries were themselves new institutions in the nineteenth century. Though Islam had already been present in the Americas since the beginning of the slave trade, it was only in the nineteenth century that the American public became more aware of Islam and had increasing contact with Muslims. It was during this period that extensive trade with the Ottoman empire emerged and more feasible travel opportunities to the Middle East became available due to the development of the steamship. Providing an in-depth look at the information about Islam that was available in seminaries throughout the nineteenth century, Muhammad in the Seminary examines what Protestant seminaries were teaching about this tradition in the formative years of pastoral education. In charting how American Christian leaders’ ideas about Islam were shaped by their seminary experiences, this volume offers new insight into American religious history and the study of Christian-Muslim relations.

Inventing The Holy Land written by Stephanie Stidham Rogers and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-06 with Religion categories.

This book presents a historical study of the phenomenon of Holy Land tourism among American Protestants during the second half of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. During this period, overseas travel was newly available to the Protestant middle class due to the invention and steady popularization of steamship travel. Protestants "at home" in America consumed vast quantities of printed literature via the popular medium of Holy Land pilgrimage narratives. A new mental geography resulted, in which Americans forged a fresh awareness of the Middle East and began to focus millennial hopes upon the political and social concept of a Jewish remnant of the last days in a Protestant theological and historical framework. Protestant support for Zionism was born. What surfaces from the study of hundreds of pilgrimage narratives from this period is the emergence of Palestine as an iconic place for American Protestants. Through pilgrimage narratives, American Protestant's understanding of Palestinians, biblical authority, the power of the Protestant press, the historicity of the Christian faith, an millennial expectations were formed as the meaning of the Holy Land was constructed. Findings from the pilgrimage narratives also indicate the importance of Palestine among Protestants as a "fifth gospel written in stone." The pilgrim's eastward gaze drew a distant biblical past into sharper focus and fueled the fires of premillenialism, a movement that would leave an enduring stamp upon American religion and politics.

No Stone Left Unturned written by Roy and Evelyn Turkington and has been published by Word Alive Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-15 with Religion categories.

This book is designed to introduce the reader to many of the major narratives of the Bible, beginning with Abraham and other patriarchs, Israel’s Judges and Prophets, Jesus Christ, Paul, and John’s Seven Churches in Revelation. This covers considerable geography from Iran (biblical Persia) and Iraq in the east, through Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Israel, and Lebanon, to Turkey, Greece, and Italy in the west. It is not a theological text, but mostly the Turkington’s travel logs from 1991–2004 when they had the opportunity to visit almost all known Bible sites. Often their experiences were funny, exciting, frustrating, sometimes daring, and on occasion a little dangerous. Together, with their two children, they drove through fields, along tracks, through fruit groves and shallow rivers, and into some quite intimidating areas. They were pummeled by stones several times, robbed three times, stopped by police or army five times, and had many exciting border crossings (including one where they were within seconds of being shot by Israeli border guards,) and they had one car accident—this all to experience these Bible lands.
