A major figure in contemporary Indian and comparative philosophy, Arindam Chakrabarti's work has spanned across disciplines such as metaphysics, aesthetics, ethics, philosophy of language and epistemology. Bringing together an international list of distinguished philosophers, this collection of essays covers key areas of Chakrabarti's work, demonstrating the breadth and depth of his philosophical contributions. Organised by discipline, each chapter from leading scholars such as Monima Chadha, Stephen Phillips and Timothy Williamson highlights the cross-cultural and borderless nature of philosophical engagement with Chakrabarti's work, concluding with responses from Chakrabarti himself. By illuminating the key elements of his thought and examining the variety of sources he draws upon, from Nyaya and Advaita to Shaivism, this volume features cutting-edge contributions that adopts Chakrabarti's method of synthesizing insights from classical Indian philosophy and contemporary analytic philosophy. The first festschrift dedicated to Chakrabarti, this volume presents his enterprise of bringing Indian and Western philosophical traditions into creative dialogue and celebrates his major contributions in defining the field of cross-cultural philosophy today.

Thinking Without A Banister written by Hannah Arendt and has been published by Schocken this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-06 with Philosophy categories.

Hannah Arendt was born in Germany in 1906 and lived in America from 1941 until her death in 1975. Thus her life spanned the tumultuous years of the twentieth century, as did her thought. She did not consider herself a philosopher, though she studied and maintained close relationships with two great philosophers—Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger—throughout their lives. She was a thinker, in search not of metaphysical truth but of the meaning of appearances and events. She was a questioner rather than an answerer, and she wrote what she thought, principally to encourage others to think for themselves. Fearless of the consequences of thinking, Arendt found courage woven in each and every strand of human freedom. In 1951 she published The Origins of Totalitarianism, in 1958 The Human Condition, in 1961 Between Past and Future, in 1963 On Revolution and Eichmann in Jerusalem, in 1968 Men in Dark Times, in 1970 On Violence, in 1972 Crises of the Republic, and in 1978, posthumously, The Life of the Mind. Starting at the turn of the twenty-first century, Schocken Books has published a series of collections of Arendt’s unpublished and uncollected writings, of which Thinking Without a Banister is the fifth volume. The title refers to Arendt’s description of her experience of thinking, an activity she indulged without any of the traditional religious, moral, political, or philosophic pillars of support. The book’s contents are varied: the essays, lectures, reviews, interviews, speeches, and editorials, taken together, manifest the relentless activity of her mind as well as her character, acquainting the reader with the person Arendt was, and who has hardly yet been appreciated or understood. (Edited and with an introduction by Jerome Kohn)

Mind Is A Myth written by U. G. Krishnamurti and has been published by Sentient Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A scathing critique of contemporary spirituality by one of its most unusual figures. In a world in which spiritual techniques, teachers, concepts, and organizations are legion, U. G. Krishnamurti stands nearly alone in his rejection of it all: The natural state is acausal: it just happens. The author does not equate the natural state with enlightenment, which he describes as an illusion created by our culture. He states emphatically that one can do nothing to attain the natural state.

The Phoenix Complex written by Michael Marder and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-04 with Philosophy categories.

An innovative, wide-ranging consideration of the global ecological crisis and its deep philosophical and theological roots. Global crises, from melting Arctic ice to ecosystem collapse and the sixth mass extinction, challenge our age-old belief in nature as a phoenix with an infinite ability to regenerate itself from the ashes of destruction. Moving from antiquity to the present and back, Michael Marder provides an integrated examination of philosophies of nature drawn from traditions around the world to illuminate the theological, mythical, and philosophical origins of the contemporary environmental emergency. From there, he probes the contradictions and deadlocks of our current predicament to propose a philosophy of nature for the twenty-first century. As Marder analyzes our reliance on the image and idea of the phoenix to organize our thoughts about the natural world, he outlines the obstacles in the path of formulating a revitalized philosophy of nature. His critical exposition of the phoenix complex draws on Chinese, Indian, Russian, European, and North African traditions. Throughout, Marder lets the figure of the phoenix guide readers through theories of immortality, intergenerational and interspecies relations, infinity compatible with finitude, resurrection, reincarnation, and a possibility of liberation from cycles of rebirth. His concluding remarks on a phoenix-suffused philosophy of nature and political thought extend from the Roman era to the writings of Hannah Arendt.
