Thin-walled structures are designed with sophisticated numerical analysis techniques and constructed using fabrication processes requiring highly skilled workmanship. However, during construction a number of factors may lead to the final structure varying from the original design. These anomalies may be associated with changes in the properties of the structure or deviations from the structure's design geometry. Even small variations from the proposed design may produce significant changes in response; this book details the influence imperfections may have on the analysis and behavior of thin-walled structures.

Thin-walled structures are designed with advanced numerical analysis techniques and constructed using sophisticated fabrication processes. There are, however, a number of factors that may result in a structure that is not exactly coincident with what was considered during the design calculations. These features may be associated with changes in the properties of the structure, in the geometry, and many others. But even small changes in the structure may sometimes produce significant changes in the response. The present work is intended to introduce professionals and researchers to the effects of imperfections on the stresses in thin-walled structures. The main idea behind the presentation is that small imperfections may introduce changes in the stresses that are nearly equal to the stresses due to the loads. The book is organized into two main parts. The first part (Chapters 1 to 6) covers the techniques for analyzing imperfections. In the second part the emphasis is on applications, which at present may be found scattered throughout many scientific and professional journals. More practical aspects of imperfections may be found in Chapter 12.It is assumed that the reader is familiar with finite element techniques, and with the basics of shell structures.

Comparative Performances Of Seismic Design Codes For Concrete Structures written by American Concrete Institute and has been published by Pergamon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The international seminar on Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes was the first opportunity for 'The Concrete Committee' of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) to organize an international event to disseminate its own research products and activities world wide. The topic of the seminar was selected following the 1996 publication of 'The Seismic Design Code' by 'The Concrete Committee' of JSCE. The damages suffered by modern concrete structures during the Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake in 1995 was the principal motivation for these revisions of the code. This presented an opportunity to try to compare the performance of the revised code with those of existing major seismic design codes in the world, i.e., CALTRANS Code, EURO Code 8, NEW ZEALAND Code. Due to the unique seminar format, Volume 1 of the proceedings introduced explanatory notes for the four codes. In addition, the four codes were applied to the comparative designs of bridge piers by 'The Committee on Comparative Design of Bridge Piers'. The outcome of this was remarkable, as shown in this work. Diversities to the designed sections according to the different codes were shown, even though the ground motions, mass of super structures and materials were the same throughout the designed bridge piers. Differences were particularly noted for high piers with large ground acceleration. In the seminar, fundamental reasons for these differences were discussed and numerical evaluations presented. Volume 1 was published prior to the seminar, Volume 2 was published after the seminar concluded. Volume 2 of the seminar proceedings includes the discussion for the contents of Volume 1 and the main elements of the four codes. Therefore, some of the modifications for the trial design of bridge piers in Volume 1, are also included reflecting the discussion at the seminar. Besides these, the contents include the numerical evaluation of designed bridge piers, which conclude the comparison of the performances of four major seismic design codes as a whole. As appendices, the main provisions of the four codes that are used in designing are attached so that the readers of the books will benefit from the convenience of the reference. The overall aim of the International Seminar on Comparative Performances of Seismic Design Codes for Concrete Structures are thus accomplished and we are quite sure that this will help structural engineers who are engaged in seismic design of RC structures to understand the differences of the basic ideas underlying in each of the seismic design code provisions with ease and to make most of those.

"Waves in Ocean Engineering" covers the whole field of wave studies of interest to applied oceanographers and ocean engineers. It has considerable relevance to coastal engineering. The book is split into 12 sections, the first of which is devoted to the practical applications of wave studies and to the history of wave research. The rest of the book covers the measurement of waves, including remote sensing; the analysis and interpretation of wave data; estimating the properties of the extreme "Design Wave", as well as of the generality of waves for fatigue calculations; waves in finite depth, wave generation by wind and wave forecasting models; non-linear effects, and errors and uncertainties in wave data.
