The Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer turns his eye to the seventeenth-century Dutch Golden Age Twenty years ago, Benjamin Moser followed a love affair to an ancient Dutch town. In order to make sense of this new place, he threw himself into the Dutch museums. Soon, he found himself unearthing the strange, inspiring and sometimes terrifying stories of the artists who shaped one of the most luminous moments in the history of human creativity, the Dutch Golden Age. As he explored the hidden world of the Dutch Masters (and one Mistress), Moser met a crowd of fascinating personalities: the stormy Rembrandt, the intimate Ter Borch, the mysterious Vermeer. Through their art, he got to know their country, too: from Pieter Saenredam's translucent churches to Paulus Potter's muddy barnyards, and from Pieter de Hooch's cozy hearths to Jacob van Ruisdael's tragic trees. Over the years, Moser found himself on increasingly intimate terms with these centuries-dead artists, and found that they, too, were struggling with the same questions he was. Why do we make art? What is art, anyway - and what is an artist? What does it mean to succeed as an artist, and what does it mean to fail? The Upside-Down World is an invitation to ask these questions, and to turn them on their heads: to look, and then to look again. It is a brilliant, colourful and learned book for anyone, whether lifelong scholar or curious tourist, who has ever felt the lure of the Dutch galleries. It shows us art, and artists, as we have never seen them before.

In 2016, his life was changed when he developed heart disease that resulted in a triple bypass surgery. After recovering from surgery, he was regaining his health back when he developed heart failure that took him into the valley of death. Prior to Christmas of 2017, the author had a divine encounter with Dr. Wencker, the medical director of Advanced Heart Failure Program at Baylor, Scott & White Hospital in Dallas, Texas, and was hospitalized to determine if he was a heart transplant candidate. The author was admitted into the heart transplant program at Baylor Hospital, Dallas, Texas, and in March of 2018 had a successful heart transplant and currently recovering. After awakening from transplant surgery his first words were "I Got My Life Back," which is the title of this book. The author writes of his experience and journey from heart disease to the heart transplant. The author writes this book from the biblical world view and not the world view that is so prevalent today. During his journey through the valley of death the author discovered that God is a God of infinite love and tender mercies, and that he hears and answers prayers and still performs miracles today. Because of His belief and faith in Christ the author is a living miracle and a testimony of the love, grace, and power of God. The Speculative Route written by Merve Tabur and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-08-29 with Literary Criticism categories.
The Speculative Route explores speculative traditions and science fictional modes across South and Southwest Asia and North Africa (SSWANA), examining their historical connections, inter- and intra-regional entanglements, overlaps, and differences. Conceptualizing science fiction and fantasy (SFF) as a mode rather than a genre, this volume challenges the putative boundaries between literary and genre fiction through critical studies and essays focusing on SFF from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Iran, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. It demonstrates the ways in which science fictional modes of thinking and imagination function as critical tools for addressing social, cultural, and political issues beyond genre conventions and expectations. Bringing together articles by leading scholars of SFF and think-pieces by acclaimed authors of contemporary SF, this volume focuses on central themes such as the relationship between aesthetics and politics, alterity, world-building, memory, trauma, colonialism and decolonization, ecology, gender, religion, and mythopoetics. It engages with the past, present, and future of speculative traditions in SSWANA, and compares the visions that emerge from these seemingly disparate––but historically connected––entities. Part of the Studies in Global Genre Fiction series, this volume will be of great interest to academics, students, and practitioners in the fields of genre studies (notably, SF, SFF), comparative literature, media and popular culture, area studies, postcolonial studies, and future studies, as well as to readers who are interested in exploring SFF works from the Global South.

Children And Yiddish Literature From Early Modernity To Post Modernity written by Gennady Estraikh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-20 with Foreign Language Study categories.
Children have occupied a prominent place in Yiddish literature since early modern times, but children’s literature as a genre has its beginnings in the early 20th century. Its emergence reflected the desire of Jewish intellectuals to introduce modern forms of education, and promote ideological agendas, both in Eastern Europe and in immigrant communities elsewhere. Before the Second World War, a number of publishing houses and periodicals in Europe and the Americas specialized in stories, novels and poems for various age groups. Prominent authors such as Yankev Glatshteyn, Der Nister, Joseph Opatoshu, Leyb Kvitko, made original contributions to the genre, while artists, such as Marc Chagall, El Lissitzky and Yisakhar Ber Rybak, also took an active part. In the Soviet Union, meanwhile, children’s literature provided an opportunity to escape strong ideological pressure. Yiddish children’s literature is still being produced today, both for secular and strongly Orthodox communities. This volume is a pioneering collective study not only of children’s literature but of the role played by children in literature.

Deconstructing America written by Peter Mason and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-29 with Social Science categories.
First published in 1990, Deconstructing America breaks new ground by locating the European discovery of America within the study of representations of Otherness. Peter Mason acknowledges that America was part of the European imagination before its discovery, but challenges the claim that the European vision of America is merely a distorted view of some extra-European reality. He relates the way in which Europe tended to see the inhabitants of South America as monstrous figures to a longstanding European tradition on the ‘Plinian’ human races, and goes on to point out that the existence of similar representations among contemporary Amerindian peoples calls into question the extent to which ethnocentrism is an exclusively European idea. Drawing on anthropological, literary and philosophical studies, he shows how European representations of America constitute a cultural monologue which tells more about the Old World than the New. This book will be a stimulating reading for all those working in the fields of symbolic and cultural anthropology, semiotics, cultural studies, Latin America, structuralism and deconstruction.
