Written by one of the most important theatrical innovators of the early 20th century, this book offers a manifesto for the future of theater as an art form. Craig advocates for a return to simplicity and directness in theatrical production, advocating for the use of simple sets, lighting, and costumes to allow the audience to engage more fully with the performers and performances. Excerpt from The Theatre Advancing I think we may listen to anything that Leonardo da Vinci says, and benefit, without indulging in that modern habit of getting peevish and arguing with every authority. "Shun those studies in which the work that results dies with the worker." To us of the theatre these words fall heavily, like a cold douche but I am tingling with the after effects. I am a member of that faculty 3 which produces work, the results of which die with the worker. As such I do not at all like Leonardo da Vinci's warning, and this sets me thinking about my calling, the theatrical faculty. The results certainly die with the worker. Must I shun my studies because of that? I rub my forehead, which wrinkles at the thought. I am puzzled. Our work, then, is like like grass is that it? Which "in the morning is green and groweth up, but in the evening is cut down, dried up arid withered." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Theatre and Boxing focuses on a problem which is of paramount importance for any theatre practitioner and researcher: the actor’s believable body. This problem has been taken up by Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Artaud, Brecht, Decroux, Copeau, Grotowski, and many others. It is an essential hurdle for all who practice the theatrical craft or want to study it theoretically. This hurdle can be considered one of the foundations of theatre science and of the relationship between technique, politics and ethics. This book tells the story of a revolution in the work of the actor in the early- and mid-20th century, a period in which the focus of theatrical interest shifted from the emotions to the body. The actor’s body became a tool for purveying a dynamic set of actions which often transformed the very actor himself. This new centrality of the body also drew attention to those places in which the body is central: the gym, the boxing ring and the circus with its trapezes and tightropes became, together with the stage, laboratories for the theatre. Thus, in addition to the reformers of the theatre the pages of this book are filled with boxers, acrobats, gymnasts and wrestlers, pursuers of an utopia: the "actor who flies".

Revealing Masks written by W. Anthony Sheppard and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-02-01 with Music categories.
W. Anthony Sheppard considers a wide-ranging constellation of important musical works in this fascinating exploration of ritualized performance in twentieth-century music. Revealing Masks uncovers the range of political, didactic, and aesthetic intents that inspired the creators of modernist music theater. Sheppard is especially interested in the use of the "exotic" in techniques of masking and stylization, identifying Japanese Noh, medieval Christian drama, and ancient Greek theater as the most prominent exotic models for the creation of "total theater." Drawing on an extraordinarily diverse—and in some instances, little-known—range of music theater pieces, Sheppard cites the work of Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Arthur Honegger, Peter Maxwell Davies, Harry Partch, and Leonard Bernstein, as well as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Madonna. Artists in literature, theater, and dance—such as William Butler Yeats, Paul Claudel, Bertolt Brecht, Isadora Duncan, Ida Rubenstein, and Edward Gordon Craig--also play a significant role in this study. Sheppard poses challenging questions that will interest readers beyond those in the field of music scholarship. For example, what is the effect on the audience and the performers of depersonalizing ritual elements? Does borrowing from foreign cultures inevitably amount to a kind of predatory appropriation? Revealing Masks shows that compositional concerns and cultural themes manifested in music theater are central to the history of twentieth-century Euro-American music, drama, and dance.
