Based on years of in-depth field research, this book unravels the complexities of the Yemeni state and its domestic politics with a particular focus on the post-1990 years. The central thesis is that Yemen continues to suffer from regional fragmentation which has endured for centuries. En route the book discusses the rise of President Salih, his tribal and family connections, Yemen's civil war in 1994, the war's consequences later in the decade, the spread of radical movements after the US military response to 9/11 and finally developments leading to the historic events of 2011. This book sets a new standard for scholarship on Yemeni politics and it is essential reading for anyone interested in the modern Middle East, the 2011 Arab revolts and twenty-first-century Islamic politics.

This book concerns the use of the drug qat in North Yemen (Yemen Arab Republic), a country lying on the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. However, because this substance is so interwoven into the fabric of society and culture, it is also necessarily about Yemen itself. The history and culture of South Arabia are still relatively unknown to the rest of the world, and the drug qat, so widely used there, is equally unknown. Thus, the material we present here should be of interest to all of those concerned with drug use, those who wish to understand more about Yemen and the Middle East, and to the Yemenis themselves. Another purpose is to develop some general understandings about sub stance uses and their effects which are less clouded by the mass hysteria and political considerations which often obscure drug issues in our own society. Examination of drug-use patterns in a country where millions of people are users on a regular basis, and where there has been familiarity with the drug for several hundred years, offers an opportunity to achieve perspectives not possible in countries with different attitudes and without such histories. I am not sanguine about the prospects of our abilities to learn from others or from the past, but I do not think we should abandon hope of doing so.

Since the onset of the Saudi-led military campaign in March 2015, the conflict in Yemen has dramatically escalated, resulting in thousands of deaths and injuries. Millions are now struggling with internal displacement and the risk of further violence, with no end to hostilities in sight. This situation has been exacerbated by a protracted blockade by the international coalition, severely restricting the import of much needed supplies of food, water and medicine. Though the impacts of ongoing insecurity and the deepening humanitarian crisis have affected all of Yemen's civilian population, the country's religious and ethnic minorities are especially vulnerable due to their long history of exclusion. Even war discriminates: Yemen’s minorities, exiled at home highlights the particular challenges facing its most marginalized groups and the ways that established patterns of discrimination have deepened in the context of the current conflict. Besides exploring the experiences of religious minorities such as Yemen's Jewish community against a backdrop of rising extremism, the report also examines how the Muhamasheen -- a group traditionally sidelined from Yemen's social hierarchy -- have struggled to access land, protection or humanitarian assistance due to their continued treatment as second-class citizens. The report provides a series of recommendations for the Yemeni government, the international community and all parties to the conflict to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the civilian population is prioritized, with particular attention paid to the country's minorities.

John Jourdain (died 1619) was a British captain in the service of the East India Company. He joined the company as a factor in 1607 and first sailed on its "Fourth Voyage" to India, making stops along the way at the Cape of Good Hope, Socotra and other Indian Ocean islands, and Aden and Mocha in Yemen, before arriving at Surat. The Fourth Voyage consisted of two ships, the Union and the Ascension. A pinnace was built and added to the two ships during a stop at Table Bay. The voyage encountered many problems, and the ships never made it back to England. Bad weather in the Indian Ocean separated the vessels, and hostilities with the Portuguese and with the natives often broke out, making the voyage the worst in the company's early history. After failing to secure a trading post in India and dismayed with the time and gifts they wasted on Mughal officials, the British headed back to the Red Sea, where they resorted to seizing and ransoming Indian ships near Mocha. Jourdain was later sent on a mission to Sumatra, this time to challenge the Dutch monopoly on trade in the Spice Islands. The Journal of John Jourdain, 1608-1617, Describing his Experiences in Arabia, India, and the Malay Archipelago is the author's narrative of the nine years he was away while serving in the East India Company. The book begins with a lengthy introduction summarizing and elucidating the events that Jourdain chronicled in his journal. It begins on March 25, 1608, when he left the Downs, on the southeast coast of England, and ends on June 19, 1617, when his journal ceased with a final entry written near Dungeness, on the way to the Downs. On a later journey, Jourdain was shot by a Dutch sniper in Patani, India and died from his wounds in July 1619. The journal entries vary in length and substance, from brief descriptions of the weather conditions at sea to much longer accounts of events and places. Lists of authorities, bibliographies, and appendices of people and places are given at the end of the book.
